Unit 5: Why the Industrial Revolution Didn't Happen in China

Instructions: Read the Washington Post article ​HERE​ and respond to the following questions in COMPLETE,

1. Why do you think human life expectancy was 38 years old in 1750?
I believe that the human life expectancy was 38 years in 1750 because we lacked the economic stability before
the industrial revolution to have luxuries and the ability to take medicine.
2. Why do you think the American life expectancy has risen to nearly 80 years old today?
I believe that the human life expectancy has risen to nearly 80 years today because we had many
technological advancements due to the industrial revolution and the rise of economic stability allowing the
lower middle class to enjoy more luxurious items.
3. How do you think life expectancy is related to the Industrial Revolution?
Before the 1800’s a high percentage of the population were extremely poor and on the brink of starvation. It
wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that people were able to afford more luxurious and essential necessities.
4. What are some main differences between China and Europe politically?
Some main differences between China and Europe politically is that China believed in stability and security
while Europe didn’t believe in that so instead they focused on progression.
5. How do you think competition between countries leads to innovation? Can you give any examples?
I think that competition between countries can lead to innovations because each country would want to be
superior and be more technologically advanced. An example of this could be WW2 when the Axis and Allies
raced to create new and better weapons, vehicles, utilities.
6. What is more important to you:​ stability ​or ​progress​? Why?
I believe that progress is more important to me because progress can often create stability as well as the
industrial revolution helped create stability in Europe.
7. What is a meritocracy? If you don’t know, look it up and summarize what you learn here.
A meritocracy is a political system where the people are in charge of economic goods and political power
based on the effort and their achievements.
8. Why does the author of this article believe that the Civil Service Exam hindered rather than helped
Chinese innovation?
The author believes the Civil Service Exam hindered Chinese innovation because studying regurgitating the
classics which just produced every generation the exact same as they were before.
9. Do you think the current American education system is hindering or helping modern innovation?
Explain your response.
I believe that the American educational system is helping modern innovation because we are always adding
new events in our history books which allows us to think of new ideas to improve ourselves, as you can see
just in the last decade we have already technologically advanced more than ever before.
10. Why does the author being interviewed believe that we will experience even more scientific progress in
the future?
The author believes that we will experience even more scientific progress because the more technology we
create the more tools we have to even make more and better inventions.
11. Do you agree with the author being interviewed about why the Industrial Revolution didn’t happen in
China? Why or why not? Support your claim with at least four pieces of evidence from your
understanding of world history.
Yes I agree with the author being interviewed about why the Industrial Revolution didn’t happen in
China. One piece of evidence that supports his statement is the decline of China because they focused
on stability instead of progression which relates back to the industrial revolution. Another example was
China’s Civil service exam because what they were taught didn’t allow them to progress like other
countries. Another reason is because it was hard for influence to reach inside China because when the
Mongols attacked they didn’t try to change the language they instead learned to speak Chinese. The
last piece of evidence is because of the different views of enlightenment and instead of using it towards
an economic advantage like Europe they used it to keep themselves how they already are instead of
progressing.
