Free Fall: Lab Report

1) The document outlines a lab report for an experiment on free fall using tennis balls and table tennis balls dropped from a height of 9.72 meters. 2) Data was collected on the time taken for each ball to fall using 3 timers, and initial analysis found the light balls took slightly less time to fall than the heavy balls. 3) However, the experiment lacked accuracy due to challenges observing the balls from the top of the building and effects of wind. Improved methods are recommended for future experiments.

Free-fall is any motion of a body where

gravity is the only acceleration acting upon
it. In the context of general relativity, where
gravitation is reduced to a space-time
curvature, a body in free fall has no force
acting on it. In this experiment, students
will test the concepts of the free-fall theory
by calculating from the records.

O B J E C T I V E

The intention of this free-fall experiment is

to learn and understand how gravitational
force related to a different type of falling
object. The method is to use three different
timers and with the help of formula, it can
calculate the force of free-falling objects
easily.

1. Divide into a group of 4 members and

assign roles for each member:
3 timers at 4th floor (with the extra task
each)
Timer A: Drop balls (New)
Timer B: Take note (Punch)
Timer C: Measure with a measuring tape
(Pup)
1 ball collector at 2nd floor (Fefa)

2. All 3 timers go to the 4th floor with materials

(6 balls, measuring tape, 3 stopwatches,
worksheet, pen).

3. Timer C measures the height from the 4th

floor (balcony) to the ground on the 2nd floor
with the help of the ball collector.

4. Timer B will take note of the height.

5. As soon as Timer A drops the ball, all 3

timers will start recording the time until the
ball hits the ground.

5
6. Timer B record the time from all 3 timers.

7. Repeat for another 2 trials.

8. Change to drops light object and repeat.

9. The ball collector brings all the balls back

to the classroom.

A. Height of 4th-floor balcony using a heavy

object (tennis ball)
Measured height = 9.72 meters

B. Height of 4th-floor balcony using a light
object (table tennis ball)
Measured height = 9.72 meters

C. Calculate the instantaneous velocity (V)

from both objects

R E S U L T S

According to the data table, there is a

difference in time taken between heavy
objects and light objects. The average
time taken of heavy objects and light
objects is 1.84 and 1.58 seconds. The
calculated distance or height of the heavy
objects and light objects is 9.72 meters.
For the results, it appears that the light
ball take more time to drop on the
ground than the heavy ball. Somehow,
this experiment might not be that
accurate because the fact that we have to
stand at the top of the building which is
very difficult for us to see or hear the ball
dropped. Moreover, the natural factor
which is air or wind can affect our results
too.

To conclude the experiment, the objective

of this experiment is to investigate and
comprehend how free-fall work. Overall,
we can assume that mass of the object
does not matter to the time it reaches to
the ground. No matter how much mass
the two objects have, both of them will
drop to the ground at the same time
because the same rate of velocity.
However, this experiment is not that
accurate so it can cause a difference result
in the experiment.

As we explored and concluded, we know

that the lab could be improved by
assigning each person clearly, so
members will know what to do and do it
efficiently. In addition, the place that is
chosen to do the experiment is also the
main factor for the calculation part; for
example, if you choose a place with a high
concentration of wind, the result will be
changed. The dropping part is also a
significant reason for the calculation part
since each timer has its own time and the
result will not be alike. However, the
results from this lab could be used as a
reference to other labs or experiments
that will be made further.
