ASSIGNMENT 1: REFLECTION
1. Based on your experience, what are the advantages and disadvantages of both paper-
and-pencil test and performance test? As a teacher, what type of assessment would
you prefer?
Test formats is determined by the instructional objectives and it depends on the teacher’s
choice on what format he/she will use. Test formats have advantages and disadvantages.
Paper-and-pencil test uses true or false items, multiple choice, matching type, and
completion formats. These formats make it easier for the teacher to rate and make
decisions if there’s a need to improve or change strategies. As for the students, they can
easily determine their performance in a certain topic or lesson. This proves that paper-and-
pencil test makes it easier to determine the achievement of a student. However, this does
not guarantee if the assessment will help students in the future. This is the major
disadvantage of paper-and-pencil test, most students will likely to study the given
instructional materials or the lesson itself, but after some assessments like summative
exams, they will tend to just pass the exam and forget or discard the knowledge or skills that
they have learned at the first place.
On the other hand, authentic assessment is the solution to the problem that paper-and-
pencil test has. Authentic assessment enables the students to experience the ‘real’ situation.
This means that this assessment makes the students to use the same knowledge they have
learned inside the classroom to the outside of the classroom. This prepares the students on
the challenges they will face ahead. However, I found that this assessment is not perfect, it
has a flaw also. Authentic assessment like demonstrations, declamation, and oration are
time consuming. Either it is individual or by group, teachers will not be able to let all of them
perform.
