Networking Devices - Lab Assignment 1 (19MIA1050) 1

This document discusses various networking devices: 1) A network interface card connects a computer to a network and converts data to digital signals. 2) Routers direct data traffic between networks and the internet, while modems convert digital signals to analog for transmission and vice versa. 3) Bridges connect different parts of a network and verify data traffic, while switches connect multiple devices simultaneously for wired or wireless connections.

Sl. No Name Picture Function
1 Network A network interface card is a
Interface circuit board or a chip that is
Card (NIC) located/installed on a computer
to help connect to a network. It
operates as a middleman
between a computer and a data
network adapter and LAN
adapter.

Connects different networking

devices on a common bus
either in wired or wireless
connection, apart from
converting data into a digital
signal. Some examples for
wireless are : WiFi, Bluetooth.
Wired : Ethernet,
Largest producer of NIC : Intel
2 Routers and
Modems A router is designed to transfer
data between computer
networks. They provide a path
between computers to decide
where information would
travel. It helps to connect to the
internet. Once the target
address has been found , the
gateway sends the address to
the ISPs that connects to the
other routers till the data has
been transferred through
connecting to the internet.

Modem : Modulator
demodulator are pieces of
hardware. Two modems, one
on each computer, are required
to make a connection, and each
modem can send and
receive data to and from the
other modem. The primary
function is to convert analog to
digital signal and back to
analog.

Difference between Router vs

Modem

A modem is a box that

connects your home network to
the wider Internet. A router is a
box that lets all of your wired
and wireless devices use that
Internet connection at once and
also allows them to talk to one
another without having to do so
over the Internet.

3 Bridges
Bridges connect two parts of a
network together. If a bridge is
sending a traffic to the other
side, it only means that the data
is going to other side. They
often verify the contents of the
data traffic going to them. They
are more complex than a hub or
repeater.
4 Switches
Helps to build a network
connection between attached
computers. Connects multiple
devices at the same time to the
internet. In case of a wired
connection, Ethernet cables are
used. In times of a wireless
instance, WiFi is a good
example.

Bridges vs Switches

A bridge can have 2 to 4 ports

only but a switch can have
many of them. Compared to a
switch, a bridge is more
software based and cannot
perform error checking.
5 Repeaters
A repeater is an electronic
device that retransmits a signal
after receiving from a source.
When repeaters are used, the
messages are received on the
other end over a longer
distance of coverage. It doesn’t
amplify the signal, however it
replicates the weak signal and
reproduces it at its original
strength.
6 Hubs
A hub connects multiple wires
coming from different
branches. They are unable to
find out best path for data
transfer which leads to
inefficiencies and wastage.

Hub vs Switch :

Hub is a signal transmitting

device that can be used as a
repeater, whereas a switch
establishes/terminates a
connection only when in times
of need. It cannot be used as a
repeater.
