Preface:
We, the students of JIS College of Engineering of B.Tech 3d year Mechanical Engineering
department, have got a golden opportunity to perform our training at UIC UDYOG LTD (wire
division), an ISO 9001:2008 certified business company in steel wire industry having state of science
multi product plant at Industrial Growth Centre, Phase-ii, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, India.
During the training period from 26-12-2014 to 26-01-2015. We have gathered a lot of practical
experience and knowledge from UIC UDYOG LTD. We have studied a lot new equipments and
auxiliaries related to the field of wire drawing.
In our report, we have depicted the wire drawing machineries /equipments / systems (pickling,
wire drawing, continuous process to heat treatment to galvanizing, spooling, etc). Finally we have
described a brief description on the policy and vision of the health, safety and environment in our
training report.
We are expressing our gratitude to all member of UIC UDYOG LTD for their cordial help.

Introduction:
Wire drawing is metalworking process use to reduce the cross-section of a wire by pulling the wire
through a single, or series of drawing die(s).
There are many applications for wire drawing including electrical wiring, cables, tension loaded
structural components, springs, paper clips, spokes for wheels and stringed musical instruments.
Although similar in process drawing is different from extrusion, because in drawing the wire is
pulled, rather than pushed through the die. Drawing is usually performed at room temperature, thus
classified as a cold working process, but it may be performed at elevated temperature for large wires
to reduce forces. The wire drawing process is quite simple in concept. The wire is prepared by
shrinking the beginning of it, by hammering filling, rolling or swaging, so that it will fit through the
die; the wire is then pulled through the die, its volume remains the same. Single block wire drawing
machines include means for holding the dies accurately in position & for drawing the wire steadily
through the holes. When the wire is on the block, it is set in motion & the wire is drawn steadily
through the die; it is very important that the block rotates evenly & that runs true & pulse the wire
at constant velocity, otherwise "snatching" occurs, which weaken or even break the wire. The
speeds at which wire vary drawn greatly, according to the material & the amount of reduction.

UIC UDYOG LIMITED (wire division) is an ISO 9001:2008 certified business house in steel wire
industry having state-of-science multi product plant at Kalyani, West Bengal, India. The automated
plant is one of the largest of its kind in India.
Location:
The factory site is located at eminent industrial area at, Industrial growth centre, Phase-ii Kalyani,
Nadia, West Bengal pin-741235
Transportation facility:
It is well connected with Kolkata by Kalyani express way & the eastern railway. The factory site is
well connected with the railway station both at Kanchrapara & Kalyani by road. It is 48 km from NSC
Bose International Airport.
Area:
The factory has 8.43 acres of land, taken from West Bengal intra infrastructure development
corporation (WIIDC).
Establishment:
Trial production 1998
Commence production 1999

Technology adapted:
UIC has come up with a new technology which will supersede the old conventional technology.
New technology of UIC WIRES LTD. Gives higher carbon ranging from 81-85 higher manganese
ranging from 70 & above in good tensile strength. UIC 1 st following efficient tempering process
instead of old conventional process.
Social obligation of UIC:
UIC is an environment conscious & socially responsible organization. It has fully functional effluent
treatment plant to ensure clean environment. It is actively involved in social forestry, spreading
women's literacy, charitable hospital etc. The company believes in overall development of the
society. UIC is associated as trustees with the following charitable organization.

Employment:
Along with several managerial & official staff it has many engineers, supervisors &workmen. Almost
1000 workmen are permanent & 500 are working on contact basis.

The company is working on 2 shift basis each of 8 hrs. Along with a general shift.
