1. In what ratio must a grocer mix two varieties of tea worth Tk. 60 a kg and Tk. 65 a kg so that by selling the
mixture at Tk. 68.20 a kg he may gain 10%?

Solution:

The cost of mixture = (68.20*100)/110 = 62TK

Let, the amount of tea worth Tk. 60 be X

& the amount of tea worth Tk. 65 be Y

ATQ,

60*X + 65*Y = 62*(X+Y)

=> 60x + 65y = 62x + 62y

=> 3y = 2x

=> x:y = 3:2

Ans: 3:2

2. A man can row three-quarters of a kilometre against the stream in 11.25 minutes and down the stream in
7.5 minutes. The speed (in km/hr) of the man in still water is:

Solution:

Let,

Speed of Boat be B
Speed of Stream be S

Given that,

When goes Up stream (B-S),

Takes 11.25 min to cross 0.75 KM

” 1 ” ” ” 0.75/11.25 KM
” 60 ” ” ” (0.75*60)/11.25 KM
= 4KM

When goes Downstream (B+S),

Takes 7.5 min to cross 0.75 KM

” 1 ” ” ” 0.75/11.25 KM
” 60 ” ” ” (0.75*60)/7.5 KM
= 6KM

Now, Adding 2 equations:

B+S = 6 …….(i)

B-S = 4……… (ii)

=> 2B = 10
=> B = 5
Speed of Boat in Still Water is 5km/h

Ans: 5km/h

3. A picture is copied on to a sheet of paper which measures 8.5 inches by 10 inches. A border of 1.5 inch is
left all around. What is the area, in square inches, covered by the picture?

Solution:

Given that,

Length of the Paper = 10 inches

Width of the Paper = 8.5 inches

Length of the Picture = 10 – (1.5*2) = 7 inches

& Width of the Picture = 8.5 – (1.5*2) = 5.5 inches

So, Area of the Picture = 7* 5.5 = 38.5 sq. inches

Ans: 38

4. A train can travel 50% faster than a car. Both start from point A at the same time and reach point B 75
kms away from A at the same time. On the way, however, the train lost about 12.5 minutes while stopping at
the stations. The speed of the car is:

Solution:

Let, Speed of car be x

& Speed of train be 1.5x

ATQ,

75/x - 75/1.5x = 12.5/60

=> (225 – 150)/3x = 12.5/60

=> 75/3x = 12.5/60

=> x = 120

Ans: 120 km/h

5. In dividing a number by 585, a student employed the method of short division. He divided the number
successively by 5, 9 and 13 (factors 585) and got the remainders 4, 8, 12 respectively. If he had divided the
number by 585, the remainder would have been?

Solution:

Let the number be x.

Now given x=5a+4, a=9b+8, b=13c+12...

By substituting the value of b we get

a = 9(13c + 12) + 8

=> a = (13*9)c + 116

Now, substituting the value of a we get

x = 5[(13 * 9)c + 116] + 4

=>x = 585c + 584

So, this when divided by 585 we get 584 as reminder.

Ans: 584

6. Three pipes P, Q and R can fill a tank in 6 hours. After working at it together for 2 hours, R is closed and P
and Q can fill the remaining part in 7 hours. The number of hours taken by R alone to fill the tank is:

Solution:

All of the pipes take 6 hours to fill 1 tank

So, all of the pipes take 1 hour to fill 1/6 tank

All of the pipes take 2 hour to fill 2/6 tank or 1/3 tank

Remaining portion = 1-1/3 = 2/3 portion

Now, P&Q can fill 2/3 of the tank in 7 hours

Therefore, P&Q can fill 1 (full) of the tank in 7*3/2 hours or 10.5 hours

That means, R can fill in 1 hour,

1/6 – 1/10.5

= 1/6 – 2/21

= (21 – 12)/126

= 9/126

3|Page

= 1/14 of the tank

So, 1/14 of the tank can be filled in 1 hour

1 (full) of the tank can be filled in 14/1*1 hour or 14 hours

Ans: 14 hours

7. Present ages of Samad and Akmal are in the ratio of 5: 4 respectively. Three years hence, the ratio of their
ages will become 11: 9 respectively. What is Akmal's present age in years?

Solution:

Let,

The present age of Samad be 5x

& that of Akmal be 4x

After 3 year their age will be (5x+3) & (4x+3) respectively

ATQ,

(5x+3) / (4x+3) = 11/9

=> 45x + 27 = 44x + 33

=> x = 6

Therefore, the present age of Akmal = 4*6 = 24

Ans: 24

8. In a two-digit, if it is known that its unit's digit exceeds its ten's digit by 2 and that the product of the given
number and the sum of its digits is equal to 144, then the number is:

Solution:

Let,

Tenth digit be X

Given that, Unit digit is X+2

ATQ,

(10x+(x+2)) * (x+(x+2)) = 144

=> (11x+2) * (2x+2) = 144

=> 22x2 + 4x + 22x + 4 = 144

4|Page
Bangladesh Bank Exam Aid
=> 22x2 + 26x -140 = 0

=> 11x2 + 13x -70 = 0

=> 11x2 + 35x – 22x -70 = 0

=> x (11x + 35) -2 (11x + 35) = 0

=> (x-2) (11x +35) = 0

=> x = 2 [As 11x = -35 is not acceptable]

So the unit digit is x+2 = 2+2 = 4

Tenth Digit is 10*2 = 20. Therefore the number is 20+4 = 24

Ans: 24

9. Two trains are moving in opposite directions at 60 km/hr and 90 km/hr. Their lengths are 1.10 km and 0.9
km respectively. The time taken by the slower train to cross the faster train in seconds is:

Solution:

Given that,

Length of slower train 1.10 KM or 1100 meter & Length of faster train 0.9 KM or 900 meter

And, Speed of Larger train = 60 km/h & Speed of Smaller train = 90 km/h

ATQ,

(Length of Larger train + Length of Smaller train)/ (Speed of Larger train + Speed of Smaller train) * 5/18

=> (1100 + 900) / (60+90)*5/18

=> 2000/(150*5 /18)

=> 2000/(25*5 /3)

=> (2000*3) / 125

=> 48 Seconds

10. In a 500 m race, the ratio of the speeds of two contestants Ajmal and Badal is 3: 4. Ajmal has a start of
140 m. Then, A wins by:

Solution:

To reach the winning post Ajmal will have to cover a distance of (500 - 140)m, i.e., 360 m.

While Ajmal covers 3 m, Badal covers 4 m

While Ajmal covers 1 m, Badal covers 4/3 m

When Ajmal covers 360m Badal covers (4*360)/3 or 480 m

Thus, when Ajaml reaches the winning post, Badal covers 480 m and therefore remains 20 m behind.

So, Ajmal wins by 20 m

Ans: 20m

11. A machine P can print one lakh books in 8 hours, machine Q can print the same number of books in 10
hours while machine R can print them in 12 hours. All the machines are started at 9 A.M. while machine P is
closed at 11 A.M. and the remaining two machines complete work. Approximately at what time will the work
(to print one lakh books) be finished?

Solution:

In 1 hour, (P + Q + R) work= (1/8 + 1/10 +1/12) = 37/120 part

Work done by P, Q and R in 2 hours = (37 x 2)/120 = 37/60 part

Remaining work = (1 - 37/60)

= 23/60 part

In 1 hour, (Q + R) work = (1/10 + 1/12)

= 11 /60 part

Now, 11/60 part work is done by Q and R in 1 hour

So, 23/60 part work will be done by Q and R in (60/11)×(23/60)

= 23/11 hours

=2 hours.

So, the work will be finished approximately after 2 hours around 1 P.M.

27. The lengths of two sides of a triangle are 7 & 11. If the length of the 3rd side is an integer, what is the least
possible perimeter of the triangle?

A) 18 B) 20 C)22 D) 23 E) None of these

Solution:

There are two conditions of Triangle while defining 3 rd side:

1. The sum of two sides is greater than the 3rd side

2. The difference of two sides is lower than the 3rd side

That means 3rd side will be lower than 11+7 = 18 & greater than 11-7 = 4

To ensure least possible perimeter we can take the value of 3 rd side as 5.

Therefore, Perimeter = 7 + 11 + 5 = 23
