Reflection
Sa Kambas ng Lipunanis a documentary written and directed by Joey A Velasco, a well experienced
painter. He also narrated and took the entirety of the video, He was only 40 years old when he passed
away because of a life threatening kidney disease, Best known of his work ‘’ Hapag ng Pag-asa’’,which
depicts the last Supper with Jesus and street children instead of the disciples.
The story started when the narrator, Mr. Velasco himself had thought about painting is more like you
just have to stretch a canvas, mix and blend colors are by finding yourself trying different things like
portraits, water, color, landscape, abstract and other variations.
Then, he was trying to draw ‘’ The Last Supper’’ instead of Jesus with the apostles he draw Jesus with
the poor loving street children’s of different life stories. At the course of painting , he somewhat like
cant share the piece as it have eyes that stares on him looking around, observing speaking and asking
question, and perturb. He just thought that it was only figures drawn by the brushes but in contrast it
wasn’t. He found out that it seemed have life.
When he started narrating, that each children in the painting have life, indeed it was a dozen of various
life stories that really touches my heart. The narrator compared his life to the life of these children. That
when is the time that he need to value life before his, that what can he provide to know the life of every
child’s in the slums. And even he realizes that this entire thing is because of the father almighty that plan
for all.
Every child the he painted has a reason and why he made them the instead of the apostles, every story
that a street children has a life that every Filipino could possible happened. Our society is just like a
canvas that we cannot say that it’s totally clear and safe but we need to see first the reality that may
affect our personal life. Sa kambas ng Lipunan is an art work that touches the heart of every Filipino not
just here in the Philippines but also in abroad, because it serves as a portrait of a society that some of us
can relate and some of us couldn’t realize that poverty exist and without knowing that those children
has also a dream and that are different by their own. As what I have saw the canvas is full of love and
acceptance because who could thought that Jesus Christ could ate with the poor children and because
of the canvas many people enlighten that even in our own way of giving and believing we can have Jesus
Christ in our hearts.
Joey Velasco is an example of an artist that no need to become popular to help a person that in needs,
and he is an image that everyone look for because he simply apply what he desire for and he wants to
show to the world that it has more on watching and pretending that life stops into the reality that we
can’t help.
In my opinion, I think it could be more pleasant if the video editor had pixilated the face of a young girl
who happened to get pregnant when she was 14years young and eventually gave birth to a child. This to
protect her as per ‘’Code of Ethics for Media’’, page 28 letter G. this code of ethics is under Section 16 of
RA 9710. One more thing, for the technical aspect, the special effect should’ve a succulent transition
from one story to another. It seems like for me it’s kind of boring when the narrator left the time gap of
the transition no background music. However, the entirety of the documentary was exemplary and has
full of lessons.
I haven’t seen any documentary tantamount to the story of ‘’Sa Kambas ng Lipunan’’ or the same
technique used by the creator of this piece. Maybe because the creator loves what he is doing and
serves it to the young individuals as his inspiration.
