Statements that argue that something needs to be done. May it be making a law or calling for action

Questions to answer to check if a claim is a CLAIM OF POLICY:

A claim of policy usually has the modals should, must, may and might.

Determining the value of a certain idea

Statements that argue that something is good, bad or valuable.

Usually compared 2 ideas against one another.

Questions to answer to check if a claim is a CLAIM OF VALUE:

Is it good or bad? Valuable or not valuable? Desirable or undesirable?

Examples:

1. Euthanasia is immoral.
2. Animal testing is the worst way to test medical products.
3. Lord of the Rings is better than Harry Potter.
GUIDELINES IN WRITING

CLAIM OF POLICY

o Claim of policy presents a clear proposal.


o Claim of policy often uses the words: should, ought to, or must.
o Support the proposal with concrete information.

CLAIM OF FACT

o Claim of fact is clearly stated.


o Claim of fact is often qualified by such terms as generally, probably or as a rule.
o Make sure that the evidence is sufficient, accurate, recent, and relevant.

CLAIM OF VALUE

o Claim of value expresses approval or disapproval.


o Claim of value attempts to prove that the action, belief, or condition is right or wrong,
good or bad.
o Use real-world examples or experiences to clarify meanings.
