    1. Definition:

    a. An acid has a PH less than 7


    b. AN acid neutralizes bases

    2. State 10 organic acids and their sources

    a. Lactic acid—milk
    b. Acetic acid—vinegar
    c. Formic acid--- venom of bee and ant sting
    d. Citric acid--- orange, lemon
    e. Oxalic acid--- vegetables, nuts and seeds
    f. Uric acid—urine
    g. Malic acid—cherries, blueberries
    h. Tartaric acid—tamarind
    i. Phthalic acid – perfume
    j. Malonic acid—synthesis of vitamin B and B6

    a. acids react with reactive metals.

    Acid + metal → salt + hydrogen


    H2SO4 + Zn → ZnSO4 + H2
    b. Acids react with bases

    c. Acids react with carbonate.

     Acid + carbonate → salt + water + carbon dioxide


    d. Reaction of metal oxides with acids

    Metal oxides react with acids to produce salt and water.


    For example reaction of copper oxide and dilute
    hydrochloric acid.
    CuO + 2HCl → CuCl2 + H2

    6. State a use for 10 named acids

    Acid Uses
    Hydrochloric acid Used for cleaning sinks
    and sanitary wear
    Sulphuric acid Used in car
    Nitric acid Used for cleaning gold
    and silver ornaments
    Acetic acids Used to remove stains
    on woodwork materials
    like furniture
    Acetylsalicylic acid Used in aspirin
    Boric acid Used as grain
    preservatives
    Citric acid Used as flavoring for
    food
    Ascorbic acid Used as treatment in
    bone marrow
    Tartaric acid Used as a component of
    baking powder
    Phosphoric acid Used in fertilizer and
    detergent industries
