Prayer to the Holy Spirit

(St. Augustine)

Breathe in me, Holy Spirit, that my

thoughts may be holy.
Move me, Holy Spirit, that my work
too may be holy.
Attract my heart, Holy Spirit, that
I may love only what is holy.
Strengthen me, Holy Spirit, that I
may defend all that is holy.
Protect me, Holy Spirit, that I
always may be holy. Amen.
LESSON 5: THE PUBLIC MINISTRY OF JESUS

1. What is the meaning of
Baptism? Can you still remember
the day (recall the date) of your
baptism?

Link:
All baptized Christians has a
share in the life and mission of
Jesus and the Church.
DOCTRINE:
1. Recall and discuss the five major events in the early life of Jesus such as
Baptism, Wedding at Cana, Proclamation of the Kingdom of God,
Transfiguration and Institution of the Holy Eucharist
2. Name and describe the Twelve Apostles

MORAL:
1. Share in the mission of Christ as baptized Christians through fidelity and
service to the Church

WORSHIP:
1. Nourish oneself as disciples of Christ through constant prayer and
reception of the Eucharist
2. Pray for the fruitfulness of the Year of Missio Ad Gentes 2021.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the
Lord has anointed me; He has sent me to bring glad
tidings to the lowly, to heal the broken-hearted, to
proclaim liberty to the captives and release to the
prisoners, to announce a year of favor from the Lord
and a day of vindication by our God, to comfort all
who mourn.”

-Isaiah 61:1-2/Luke 4:18-19

1st Luminous Mystery: The Baptism of Jesus:
Staying Close to the River of Life
(Mark 1:9-11; Matthew 3:13-17; Luke 3:21-22)

Pope John Paul II writes: “As Christ

descends into the waters, the
heavens opened wide and the voice
of the Father declares Him the
beloved Son while the Spirit descends
on Him to invest Him with the
mission which he is to carry out.”

What does this speak about the identity of Jesus?

What about his mission?
The Catechism of the Catholic
Church says: “Jesus’ messianic
consecration was revealed at the
moment of His baptism by John,
when God anointed Him with
power and the Holy Spirit, that He
might be revealed to Israel as its
Messiah.”
What does Jesus’ baptism teach us about our own
baptism?
The Holy Spirit, like a dove, descended upon Jesus
as witnessed by John the Baptist. This helps us
understand better our own baptism.

When God pours new life into us

at Baptism through the life-giving
Spirit, it is a permanent
relationship that is given to us, a
permanent baptismal river of life.
Application to My Life Today.
Meditating on this mystery is helpful at those times
when we feel unloved or uninspired. God is always ready
to embrace us as beloved children. Indeed, God’s Spirit is
a river of life and love ever flowing within us.
2nd Luminous Mystery - The Wedding at Cana:
Mary’s Role in Her Son’s “First Sign” (John 2:1-11)

The changing of water into wine is the first of the

signs given by Jesus. The Jerusalem Bible says that
every true prophet must have “signs” or wonders
worked in God’s name.
Why did Jesus perform signs or
miracles?

Jesus worked signs “to stimulate

faith in His divine mission.”
The evangelist John writes that Jesus “let His glory be
seen, and His disciples believed in Him.” (Jn 2:11)

The word “glory” in the Bible

refers to the manifestation of
God’s presence. In Christ’s
human nature, we don’t
always see the glory of God
manifested.

But at special times like Baptism, Transfiguration and

Wedding at Cana the divine glory shines through brightly.
Let’s now turn to Mary’s motherly intervention in the
Cana story. First is her simple observation: “They have
no wine”, and her inspired words to influence Jesus’
behavior: “Do whatever he tells you.”

Why did Mary do this?

Jesus’ first sign at Cana

was an important first
step leading toward his
“hour.”
Application to My Life Today

No situation of human
need is outside the scope of
God’s healing interest and
care. Like Jesus and His
mother, we are called to be
instruments of God’s
healing mission in the
midst of everyday human
circumstances.
3rd Luminous Mystery - Jesus’ Proclamation of
the Kingdom: Our Call to Conversion (Matthew
3:2; 4:17; Mk 1:15; Luke 17:21)

The Kingdom of God is the

central image that ties
together the five Mysteries of
Light. It mirrors God’s saving
presence in our world.
God sent His only Son into this
world to proclaim the Kingdom
and engage in a mission of
healing and forgiveness.
To accomplish His mission of
healing and forgiveness, Jesus
willingly divested Himself of His
divine glory, even to the point of
shedding His blood.

Application to My Life Today

When we feel helpless to solve the world’s immense
problems (disease, terrorism, poverty) it’s time to
remember that God’s Kingdom is at hand. We do not
work alone, rather, we turn to Jesus, who is ever present
and powerful at our side.
The Disciples of Jesus
The disciples of Jesus were
ordinary people with
extraordinary calling. They
were composed of fishermen,
tax collector, uneducated, hot
heads, hungry for great power,
betrayed and deserted him.
But their association with
Jesus made them capable of
doing extraordinary things.
Why did Jesus choose exactly
twelve apostles and the early
Christian community
maintained the number after
the death of each one of them?

12 Tribes of Israel – Chosen People of God

12 Apostles – foundation of the new community of faith, the
Church, who shared in the power of Christ and continue His
mission
4th Luminous Mystery - The Transfiguration:
Connecting to Jesus’ Glory
(Matthew 17:1–8, Mark 9:2–8, Luke 9:28–36)
Who did Jesus invite to go with him
to the mountain?
Who were seen together with Jesus
when he was transfigured?

Why did PJPII call the

Transfiguration as the “mystery of
light par excellence?”

What does this event remind us about Jesus’ nature?

Two Mountains: Tabor and Calvary

Calvary Tabor

On Mt. Tabor, Moses looks out at Peter who will lead God’s
people of the New Covenant. On Mt. Tabor, Jesus was
flanked by two heroes, on Calvary, by two criminals. At the
Transfiguration, His clothes become dazzlingly white; at the
Crucifixion He is stripped of His garments.
Application to My Life Today.
Church of the
Transfiguration at Mt. Tabor
Even if we feel crushed, oppressed
or dehumanized, it’s consoling to
know that nothing can really
separate us from God’s glory.
By clinging to God in prayer, we
the branches, remain one with the
Vine, sharing in the divine life.
5th Luminous Mystery - The First Eucharist:
Becoming One Body Through Jesus
(Matthew 26:17–29; Mark 14:12–25; Luke 22:7–38;
1Corinthians 11:23–25).
The fifth Mystery of Light takes us
to Jesus’ Last Supper, where He
shares His very self in the form of
bread and wine.
It is truly an expression of God’s
love in the form of a banquet.
This holy meal unites us in love
with God and with one another so
that we become the one body of
Christ.
In the Eucharist, Christ
testifies to the end His love
for humanity. He handed
over His body to the
community gathered around
Him.

When Jesus said: “Do this in memory of me”, He is not

simply saying that we should repeat the ritual but also
to imitate what He has done for the community.
We, too, are being asked to hand over
our bodies, in love and service to the
community.
Ex: Outreach Activities

Application to My Life Today

We often feel a profound hunger to unite ourselves with the

Source of all love and with the whole family of God.
With praise and thanksgiving, we turn to Christ in the
Eucharist, the Bread of Life who nourishes us and forms us
into one Body.
