ACTIVITY 2:
The name of the artwork is The River of Life who was painted by none other
than Galo Ocampo on the year 1954. Galo Ocampo made the painting with use of
oil on plywood. Some objects can be seen in the painting like, trees, people, rocks,
mountains, red water and weird shapes.
The shapes, colors and textures work together like crap, the color green
doesn’t suit the atmosphere and mood of the painting. They do not create harmony,
oneness, wholeness or balance. Ocampo colored the bodies, the trees, and the earth
very differently and intensely, creating a desolate, nightmarish landscape. Ocampo
creates a sense of movement using rhythmic, or repeating elements and directional
brushwork which lead audience, such as me to be drawn through the composition of
the work. I did not expect the proportion of the different elements on the art work
to be like this. I was surprise when I first laid my eyes on the painting and the
figure that I found interesting was supposed to be two flagellating figures taking a
bath in a stream of blood, the twisted branches and the jagged landscape that
creates tensions and sharp, erratic movements. These figures really gave me the
chills because of the weird and nightmarish they’re portrayed in the painting.
I truly love the masterpiece, “The River of Life” because of how dark the
mood and atmosphere are, but also at the same time I also love the fact that it’s
very mysterious and has a deeper meaning into it that only Galo Ocampo knows.
The River of Life is a good piece of work because of how Ocampo colored the
bodies, the trees, and the earth very differently and intensely, creating a desolate,
nightmarish and twisted but unique landscape. This masterpiece of Ocampo is an
important piece of work to the people who are suffering from hunger, inequality
and poverty because of how the painting depicted it in various ways. I would gladly
display this art work at home but, its rightful place would be at the museum so that
many people can see it. Overall, I think Galo Ocampo did a great job in using his
tools and technique very well which lead to making an amazing masterpiece.
PERFORMANCE TASK:
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
- The Great Wave off Kanagawa, also known as The Great Wave or simply
The Wave, by the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. The materials used
by Katsushika is polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper
which is appropriate for the technique his using the, Ukiyo-e printing.
Why? Because they work together very well and that lead to creating
vivid bright colors with an overall of calm feeling. Not just that but it
also created wholeness, harmony and balance.
2. How did you critique the available materials and technique on the
picture of the artwork you provide?
- I critiqued them based on the output’s outcome, the beautiful colors the
artist used and how they created harmony in the painting using the said
materials and technique.
3. How did you come up on that justification on the use of materials and
application of techniques on the artwork?
- By focusing on the painting and at the same time analyzing its shapes,
size, and colors whether they create harmony or not. That way I was able
to come up a justification on the use of materials and techniques.
