ENGLISH LANGUAGE 1122/1

PAPER 1

OCTOBER 2001 SESSION 1 hour 30 minutes


SECTION A (30 MARKS)

Write a composition on one of the following topics. Your answer should be


between 350 – 450 words in length. You should spend not less than 50
minutes on this section.

1. The beauty of wildlife. [30]

2. Write a story based on one of the following statements:

Either (a) As soon as he entered the hall, there were shouts of


joy. [30]

Or (b) As the fateful day drew closer, a feeling of anxiety


haunted her.

3. The debate on the equality between men and women can never be
resolved. What are your views? [30]

4. The lost keys. [30]

5. Write about an incident when you hurt someone’s feelings although


you intended to help. [30]

6. Land. [30]

7. Describe an incident which has brought about remarkable changes in


your family. [30]
SECTION B (20 MARKS)

Answer the following question. You should spend not more than 40 minutes
on this section. Begin your answer on a fresh page.

8. Imagine that you are one of the students taking part in a Public
Speaking competition. The topic you have chosen is:

“Today’s Youths Are Misunderstood”

Using the following ideas and any other you may think of, write out
your speech.
- times have changed,
- different values and beliefs,
- youths capable of managing their time,
- adult expectations too high,
- attitude towards school and work not always negative,
- youths’ involvement in community projects a sign or
responsibility,
- adult advice well taken. [20]
