Setting V-Speeds Using the DCP

There are two modes for setting V-Speeds on the Airspeed Indicator:
• Takeoff (TO)
• Approach (APP).
The mode is selectable on the DCP using the TO / APP Reference Speed
Selector.
Default V-Speeds are displayed in white and change to green when set.
• In the TO mode,
– The pilot must select and set V1, VR, V2 and VREF in sequence.
– The first speed selected and set is always V1.
– After the Reference Speed SET Switch is pressed (speed changes
from white to green), the next V-speed can be selected and set.
– Once all V-Speeds are green, the SPD REF SET Selector and
Reference Speed SET Switch are not active unless the TO / APP
Reference Speed Selector is cycled.
• In the APP mode,
– The pilot must select and set VREF, +40 and +80 speeds in
sequence.
– The first speed selected and set is always VREF.
– After the Reference Speed SET Switch is pressed (speed changes
from white to green), the +40 and +80 speeds are automatically
calculated and should be set.
– Once all speeds are green, the SPD REF SET Selector and
Reference Speed SET Switch are not active unless the TO / APP
Reference Speed Selector is cycled.
• If landing other than flaps 30,
– The pilot must first select and set the other than flaps 30 VREF.
– Once the other than flaps 30 REF speed has been selected and set,
the white REF speed will change to green.
– The system automatically computes the +40 and +80 speeds from the
other than flaps 30 REF speed previously set and must be corrected.
– The crew must calculate the correct +40 and +80 speeds from the
flaps 30 VREF for the landing weight.
– The automatically computed +40 and +80 speeds should then be
manually adjusted by the flight crew to the correct speeds.
– Once the +40 speed has been manually selected, press the
Reference Speed SET Switch (speed changes from white to green).
– Once the +80 speed has been manually selected, press the
Reference Speed SET Switch (speed changes from white to green).

System Description
General
Flat Panel System Description

The Flat Panel Display System (FPDS) supplies information to the flight
crew on four flat panel liquid crystal display (LCD) units and two cathode ray
tubes (CRT) displays for EICAS. The units display three primary groups of
information:
• Primary Flight Display (PFD)
• Navigation Display (ND)
• Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS).

Flat Panel Display System (FPDS) Overview

During normal operations the Flat Panel Display System (FPDS) consists
of:
• Three (L, C, R) Data Concentrator Units (DCUs)
• Two Display Control Panels (DCPs)
• Two Primary Flight Displays (PFDs)
• Two Navigation Displays (NDs)
• Ambient light sensing units.
The FPDS uses information provided by a variety of airplane systems to
generate the appropriate visual presentations on the PFD and ND.
• Data relating primarily to navigation is provided by airplane systems such
as the navigation radios, flight management computer (FMC) and the
inertial reference systems (IRS).
• Data relating primarily to automatic flight is provided by the flight control
computers (FCCs), autothrottle (A/T) and the FMC.
• Data which is used to display current airplane state information is
provided by the two air data computers (ADCs) and the three inertial
reference systems (IRSs).
• Automatic adjustment of the lighting intensity for each display unit is
provided by the ambient light sensing units.
• Flight crew control of the FPDS is accomplished by positioning the
various controls on the respective Display Control Panels (DCPs) to the
desired settings.
In the event of a display failure, the default format of the PFD is
automatically presented on the remaining display. All the information
required to safely fly the airplane is available on the PFD without any
functional degradation.

Data Concentrator Unit (DCU)

Three DCUs are the main airplane equipment interface of the FPDS. The
DCUs receive inputs from various airplane systems. Each pilot’s PFD and
ND displays are provided data from the DCU selected with their respective
EFI Switch. The left DCU normally provides the Captain’s displays. The
right DCU normally provides the First Officer’s displays. The center DCU is
available as an alternate source for either or both pilots. Each DCU receives
information including VOR, DME and ADF data for presentation on the PFD
and ND displays.

Display Control Panel (DCP)

The DCPs control display options, modes, ranges and brightness for the
respective PFDs and NDs.

Display Selection, Control Examples and Failure Modes

The normal FPDS operating mode is for a PFD outboard and an ND inboard
on the Captain’s and First Officer’s instrument panels.
In the event of a display system failure, the FPDS will automatically
reconfigure itself. The PFD will always be made available at either the
inboard or outboard position. The only function lost in this back up mode is
the ability to call up the Plan (PLN) mode, which is an ND function only. All
display modes (MAP, APP and VOR) are still selectable in the HSI area of
the PFD.

Flight Instruments
Conventional Instruments System Description
Introduction
Flat Panel Conventional Instruments System Description

The conventional instruments provide information in addition to the EFIS

displays to aid pilots in controlling the airplane throughout its flight regime.
This section includes a discussion of the primary instruments, standby
instruments, and the pitot static system.

Primary Flight Instruments

Clock
Alternative 1
Two electronic clocks are installed, with two digital displays on each clock.
Either coordinated universal time (UTC), local time, or date may be set on
the upper time display. The lower ET / CHR display is used for either
elapsed time or the chronograph. Separate controls are provided for each
display.
Alternative 2
Two electronic clocks are installed, with two digital displays on each clock.
Either coordinated universal time (UTC) or local time may be set on the
upper time display. The lower ET / CHR display is used for either elapsed
time or the chronograph. Separate controls are provided for each display.

Standby Flight Instruments

Integrated Standby Flight Display (ISFD)
The ISFD displays attitude, airspeed, altitude, ILS, and magnetic heading
information. It is connected directly to the L AUX PITOT and the alternate
static sources. (Refer to Pitot-Static System Schematic.) Attitude
information is provided by internal inertial sensors. ILS information is
provided by the center ILS receiver. The display receives its heading
information from the left IRS only. Heading information is not available in
polar regions.
NOTE
The Standby Magnetic Compass must be used to validate heading
information.
The Standby DC Bus powers the ISFD. Selecting the Battery Switch ON
and the Standby Power Selector to AUTO activates the ISFD. After 10
seconds, an initialization sequence begins that requires 90 seconds to
complete. ATT and INIT 90s messages are displayed during initialization.
Initialization will stop if airplane movement is excessive and will resume
when airplane movement is acceptable for initialization. Upon completion of
the initialization sequence, attitude information displays.
Detection of a momentary out-of-limit ISFD condition may cause the attitude
display to blank and the WAIT ATT or ATT:RST message to display.
Operation of the Attitude Reset Switch is required in response to the
ATT:RST message. This will reset the horizon line with the airplane symbol.

Flight Instruments -Conventional
Instruments System Description
757/767 Operating Manual

On the ground, operation of the Attitude Reset Switch must be performed

with the airplane stationary. In flight, operation of the Attitude Reset Switch
must be performed with the airplane in wings level, non-accelerated flight.
During the process, the ATT 10s message displays. Failure to maintain
straight and level flight for 10 seconds may result in an ATT:RST message.
If the reset attempt is unsuccessful, the ATT:RST message remains
displayed and attitude will not be displayed.

Standby Magnetic Compass

A standard magnetic standby compass is provided. A card located near the
compass provides heading correction factors.

Flight Recorder
The flight recorder provides a permanent record of selected operational
systems in a sealed, fire-resistant container. The recorder automatically
turns on when either engine is operating or the airplane is in flight.

Air Data System

The air data system consists of the pitot-static system, one temperature
probe (TAT), two angle of attack probes, two air data computers (ADCs),
and electric flight instruments.
The system provides pitot and / or static pressure information to various
flight instruments and airplane systems. Standby airspeed and altimeter
indicators are also provided. The ADCs use air data information to provide
input signals to certain flight instruments (electric Mach / airspeed indicator,
electric altimeter) and other using systems (AFDS, FMC, etc.). The left
instruments use the left ADC and the right instruments use the right ADC.
The opposite ADC is available as an alternate air data source.
Warning flags indicate instrument failure or unreliable data. When a
malfunction occurs in instruments with failure monitors, warning flags
appear.
The EICAS caution messages ALT DISAGREE or IAS DISAGREE display
when there is a significant difference between the left and right air data
information. These messages are inhibited at low altitude or when both
pilots have the same air data source selected.
