Classroom Management Plan Lynsey Walker: Theorists

The classroom management plan outlines the teacher's philosophical approach and procedures for student behavior and classroom operations. The teacher believes in fostering positive relationships and a nurturing learning environment. On the first day, students will complete icebreakers, establish rules, and learn procedures. The plan details bathroom breaks, snack time, and dismissal routines. A hierarchy of consequences addresses misbehavior from mild redirection to calls home. Student motivation is encouraged through individual rewards and whole class incentives.

Classroom Management Plan

Lynsey Walker

Theorists
Lee Canter and Marlene Canter
Educators and students have rights in the classroom. Educators insist upon responsible behavior
and use a hierarchical list of consequences to manage behavior.

Eunice Shriver
By promoting a positive learning environment, positive attitudes, and respect for others, and by
infusing five core values into the curriculum, teachers can help students to make sound behavior
choices.

Carolyn Evertson and Alene Harris

Educators provide learner-centered classrooms, consider instructional management and behavior
management, and begin the school year with clear rules and expectations.

Philosophical Statement
● The goals of classroom management should be to ensure each child’s physical and mental
safety, manage student behavior, and to assure that the school day progresses in an orderly
fashion.
● I believe that students learn best in an environment where they feel safe, comfortable,
respected, and included.
● I feel in order to be a good teacher it will be my job to foster positive relationships and create a
nurturing environment that is conducive to students learning. I will provide lessons that meet
the individual needs of all my students and are hands on and engaging.
● I also feel it is important to incorporate student’s personal experiences into our lessons, as well
as provide plenty of opportunities for group work, social interaction, and discussions.
● I would like to involve my students in the workings of our classroom, creating a community of
learners who feel a sense of responsibility towards their own learning.
● In regard to discipline, I would like to teach my students to use self-control rather than having to
constantly discipline them.
● I will consider my students ideas and incorporate them into my classroom rules and procedures.
● I feel that an educator should always be willing to learn from their students, reflect, and adapt
their classroom management plan when necessary. The goals of classroom management should
be to ensure each child’s physical and mental safety, manage student behavior, and to assure
that the school day progresses in an orderly fashion.

First Day
● As my students arrive, I will high five each student and welcome them to our classroom.
● I will first introduce myself to my students and allow them to ask me a few questions in order to
gain their trust.
● We will complete an Ice breaker activity to encourage social interaction and community
between my students. For example, students can complete an about me page with preset
questions to fill out (favorite color, birthday, favorite tv show, hobby, etc). Each student will
then pick 3 things from the sheet to share with the class. We can then glue the sheets into a
notebook, creating a classroom dictionary.
● As a class we will decide upon what rules we will incorporate into our classroom policy and sign
a group contract.
● I will administer a student survey to learn about the interests and learning styles of my students
so that I may plan our academic activities in a way that addresses all students' needs.
● We will discuss our daily class schedule, as well as procedures for entering and exiting the
classroom.
● I will give my students a tour of the room, showing them where materials, centers, and cubbies
are located.
● We will also go over the bathroom procedure and discuss classroom duties or jobs.

Classroom Policies
● 2 bathroom passes (boy and girl) and one emergency pass for another student -Students will
sign out with their name on the board
● Students will have a cubby for their belongings
● Students will have rotating class jobs that will change every six weeks
● Students will help to create the rules for our class contract

Classroom Procedures
Morning Work

● First I will greet my students and welcome them to class each day.
● Students will have a morning activity such as free write in their journals.
● I will spend a few minutes allowing students to share any exciting info they would like to share
with the class.

Restroom

● Take a pass, write your name on the board. Two students can be out to use the restroom at a
time. In the case that a third student needs to go I will have an extra emergency pass.

Snack

● Students will be allowed to bring a healthy snack to class with them each day. They may also
bring a water. I will send home a list of acceptable and unacceptable snack choices.

Take home Folder

● Students will receive a take home communication folder. Students will return the folder to
school each day. The folder will contain important information, a conduct card, and graded
papers.

Dismissal

● Students will clean their area and complete their assigned job.
● Students will return materials to appropriate places and make sure their chairs are pushed in.
● When each table is clean all students must be standing behind their chairs. Once I see that every
student at the table is standing behind their chair I will dismiss that table to get in line.
Steps to Address Misbehavior
● I want to implement a consistent system when addressing misbehaviors. Therefore, I will
implement a hierarchy of consequences.
● First I would like to make clear what behaviors are appropriate and what behaviors are not.

Mild Consequences

● When a student is misbehaving I will give them a look or hand gesture

● Rather than call out the student who is misbehaving I will give a shout out to a student who is
modeling the desired behavior.

Moderate Consequences

● Student is pulled aside in order to reflect on their negative behavior and self-discipline.
● Student will receive a mark on the class behavior chart.
● After three marks, the students home behavior chart will be marked.

Severe Consequences

● Student receives a phone call home

● Meeting is held with parents

● Natural and reasonable consequences

Student Motivation
For student motivation I will use an individual a reward system to reinforce positive behaviors. I
will give students a ticket when I see positive behaviors being performed. Students will be able to use
the tickets to buy prizes from our classroom store. I will also have a whole class reward such as a paper
chain where I will add a link each day the class is showing appropriate behavior. I can also take one off
when negative behaviors arise. When the link reaches the floor, I will bring the class a treat or have a
small party. To increase intrinsic motivation, I will also be sure to praise my students accomplishments
and give students a sense of control and responsibility in the classroom.
