GE – Science, Technology and Society

Research and discuss the following.

1) How is science used in technology?
2) What does science technology and society mean?
3) How science can have an effect on society?
4) What is the relationship between science and society?
5) History of science and technology in the Philippines.
Answers:

1. Science contributes to technology in at least six ways: (1) new

knowledge which serves as a direct source of ideas for new
technological possibilities; (2) source of tools and techniques for more
efficient engineering design and a knowledge base for evaluation of
feasibility of designs; (3) research instrumentation, laboratory
techniques and analytical methods used in research that eventually
find their way into design or industrial practices, often through
intermediate disciplines; (4) practice of research as a source for
development and assimilation of new human skills and capabilities
eventually useful for technology; (5) creation of a knowledge base
that becomes increasingly important in the assessment of technology
in terms of its wider social and environmental impacts; (6) knowledge
base that enables more efficient strategies of applied research,
development, and refinement of new technologies. Basically,
Technology is easy to use, it depends on how they use it formally or
in their own way because most technology, it shows how you manage
it carefully. Source:

2. Science, Technology and Society (STS) is an interdisciplinary field

that studies the conditions under which the production, distribution
and utilization of scientific knowledge and technological systems

occur; the consequences of these activities upon different groups of

people. STS builds on the history and philosophy of science and
technology, sociology and anthropology, policy studies, and cultural
and literary studies; all of which shape the modes of analysis deployed
in the field. The intercollegiate program brings together courses taught
in a variety of departments, and is divided into three principal areas:
history of science and technology, philosophy of science and
technology, and social science approaches to technology and science.
Courses explore the effects of science and technology on society and
culture; the politics of socio-technical systems; science policy in
national and international contexts; the social and environmental risks
vs. benefits of technological and scientific advancement and, more
specifically, cover topics such as the political economy of pollution,
the culture of the scientific laboratory, theories of race and genetic
engineering, social networking and the Internet, the body and politics
of health. STS shows others how these things manage to work
together in our place because most of us use gadgets everywhere
especially the modern days, children are using gadgets nowadays,
parents don’t mind them using it as long as they are happy but there
should be a limit on using gadgets. Be aware that technology can
destroy your eyes. Source: https://www.pitzer.edu/academics/field-

3. Science and technology have had a major impact on society and their
impact is growing. By drastically changing our means of
communication, the way they work, our housing, clothes and food,
our methods of transportation and indeed, even the length and quality
of life itself, science has generated changes in the moral values and
basic philosophies of mankind. Some sciences destroys images of
people who use something to take revenge but taking revenge is one
thing sciences are also made because they refuse to lose something

that they own, someone that they may hate for destroying their life.

4. The relationship between science and society is that science is the

greatest collective endeavor. It contributes to ensuring a longer and
healthier life, monitors our health, provides medicine to cure our
diseases, alleviates aches and pains, helps us to provide water for our
basic needs – including sports, music, entertainment and the latest
communication technology and lastly, it nourishes our spirit. The
society provides science a generation of solutions for everyday life
and helps us to answer the great mysteries of the universe. In other
words, science is one of the most important channels of knowledge. It
has a specific role, as well as a variety of functions for the benefit of
our society: creating new knowledge, improving education, and
increasing the quality of our lives. It is a life-changing experience for
us because the society provides science that helps us or either can
destroy someone (in my own opinion). Source:

5. The need to develop a country's science and technology has generally

been recognized as one of the imperatives of socioeconomic progress
in the contemporary world. This has become a widespread concern of
governments especially since the post world war 11 years. Among
Third World countries, an important dimension of this concern is the
problem of dependence in science and technology as this is closely
tied up with the integrity of their political sovereignty and economic
self-reliance. There exists a continuing imbalance between scientific
and technological development among contemporary states with 98
per cent of all research and development facilities located in
developed countries and almost wholly concerned with the latter's
problems. Dependence or autonomy in science and technology has
been a salient issue in conferences sponsored by the United Nations. It

is within the above context that this paper attempts to examine the
history of science and technology in the Philippines. Rather than
focusing simply on a straight chronology of events, it seeks to
interpret and analyze the interdependent effects of geography, colonial
trade, economic and educational policies and socio-cultural factors in
shaping the evolution of present Philippine science and technology.
As used in this paper, science is concerned with the systematic
understanding and explanation of the laws of nature. Scientific
activity centers on research, the end result of which is the discovery or
production of new knowledge. This new knowledge may or may not
have any direct or immediate application. In comparison, technology
has often been understood as the "systematic knowledge of the
industrial arts. As this knowledge was implemented by means of
techniques, technology has become commonly taken to mean both the
knowledge and the means of its utilization, that is, "a body, of
knowledge about techniques. Modern technology also involves
systematic research but its outcome is more concrete than science, i.e.
the production of "a thing, a chemical, a process, something to be
bought and sold. In the past, science, and technology developed
separately, with the latter being largely a product of trial and error in
response to a particular human need. In modern times, however, the
progress of science and technology have become intimately linked
together. Many scientific discoveries have been facilitated by the
development of new technology. New scientific knowledge, in turn,
has often led to further refinement of existing technology or the
invention of entirely new ones. Source: PDF file:
