The region’s leading event dedicated to developing and delivering world-class bridges and tunnels
Of the US $100 billion investment in Qatar’s transport sector, over US $20 billion has been earmarked for developing
bridges, tunnels and interchanges in order to link the railway and road projects within the city and to the rest of the
GCC. Multi-modal transport integration is providing operational and logistical challenges due to the lack of revised
traffic signalling once a bridge has been completed. Furthermore, there has been a lack of asset management and
durability considerations for the material selection and testing process. Finally, project time-scales have been
shortened considerably to meet demand which requires the development of revised installation and construction
methods.
Across the GCC - Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, a number of Causeway projects have been
planned in order to link the GCC rail network in addition to the national rail networks within each country; plus
numerous interchanges, overpasses and pedestrian crossings on the main highways and within municipalities. In
addition, as space above ground for the GCC’s expanding cities becomes more and more limited, the decision to build
under ground is fast becoming the preferred solution. US $279 billion worth of infrastructure projects in the region
include a tunnelling element, with US 192 billion located within the GCC.
The 5th Annual Bridges Middle East will offer a platform for all stakeholders within the bridge and tunnel project
value chain, from planning and design, to construction and procurement, to maintenance and asset management, in
order to discuss and exchange international best-practice methods for maximising the life-span of structures.

QATAR PROJECTS OVERVIEW
All of the projects have been designed to consider the rising population whilst reducing commute times and
easing traffic congestion and increase connectivity across the city help deliver a world-class transportation
network for Doha.
1) The Qatar Integrated Railway Project encompasses four metro lines, a tramway and a people-mover serving two new
cities, extensive commuter railways, a high speed line across the planned road-rail causeway to Bahrain, and a mixed-
traffic link to neighbouring Saudi Arabia. In April invitations to tender were issued for four tunnelling packages worth
US$2billion - US$3billion each for the first sections of a planned 213 route km metro in greater Doha.

Qatar Railways Company is developing the US $3 billion Doha Metro rail project - the proposed 216km series of rail
lines will be constructed from a 110km tunnel – split into 4 packages - and a sequence of elevated sections.
The initial tenders for the Doha metro cover two running tunnels and two underground stations at Musheireb and
Education City. The ITT for railway systems will follow in mid-2012, with a view to fit-out being underway by 2016.
The tunnelling contracts are expected to be awarded in October, and the first TBM drive is planned to start in late 2013
or early 2014. These contracts form part of the 75.4km Phase 1a, which would run mostly underground and serve 26

2) The Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning and Qatar Public Works Authority, Ashghal are developing the iconic
Doha Bay Crossing, a US $12 billion bridge which will also consist of a combination of bridges and tunnels. This project
is in the detailed design phase.
3) In addition, Qatar Public Works Authority, Ashghal have committed US $12 billion for road and infrastructure projects,
which includes over 300 new high-quality bridges; most of them part of interchanges on the express highways, over
the next six years.
4) Lusail City development will contain numerous marina bridges and interchanges to connect the islands together.
5) Lusail Expressway Project - Inside the city, a carefully planned road network has been developed with highway
entrances, crossroads and numerous bridges, all of which connect Lusail City with the Khor highway and beyond.
The QR 3.5 billion major project has a complex network of tunnels, flyovers and junctions and will respond to
future traffic demands. The project includes three major interchanges which will completely transform the way
people move in and around the area: Al Wahda Interchange, The Onaiza Interchange will be a fully free flow
interchange built below and above ground on four levels and The Pearl Interchange will become a three level
interchange with a future light rail transit tunnel underneath. All the tunnels will be enhanced with decorative
cladding and feature lighting. The scheme also includes two new multi-lane canal crossing bridges.
The Expressway Programme is a nationwide road infrastructure programme that will see around 30 major road
projects across Qatar including new and upgraded freeways, expressways and arterial roads, a new orbital highway
and truck route as well as substantial upgrades to existing roads.

6) The Lusail Light Railway Transit project which will consist of a network of bridges and tunnels. The network is
composed of four main tram lines extending over 30.5 kilometres underground and over ground and 36 passenger
stations.

7) Industrial Road Construction and Infrastructure Upgrading Project - This QR 2.34 billion project is part of the
Expressway Programme and will be a major link between the Industrial Area and the city. There are four multi-
level interchanges along the industrial road and one multi-level interchange along F-Ring Road as well as a
directional tunnel from the industrial road to the Barwa City development.
