ROCOCO ART, SCULPTURE AND PORCELAIN

SLIDE 1: INTRO
 Rococo or "Late Baroque", is an 18th-century artistic movement and style, which
affected several aspects of the arts including painting, sculpture, architecture, interior
design, decoration, literature, music and theatre.
 Mostly associated with the reign of Louis XV in France
WHO IS LOUIS?
 Louis XV became King in 1715 after the death of his Great-Grand Father,
Louis XIV. H was 5 years old at the time of his ascension to the throne of
France.
 He was King of France from September 1, 1715 until his death in 1774
SLIDE 3
 The Rococo style of art began in 18th Century in France and spread to other parts of
Europe.

Interms of History
 Rococo style developed toward the end of the Baroque period
 Rococo developed as a protest to the drama and dark colors of the Baroque period
and to the more formal and geometric style Louis XIV.

SLIDE 4
What does 'Rococo' mean and where does the name come from?

 The word Rococo is seen as a combination of the French rocaille, “ROKAI” meaning

“rock work”, and coquilles, “KUH KEELZ” meaning shell”due to reliance on these
objects as motifs of decoration.
 The term Rococo may also be interpreted as a combination of the Italian word
"barocco" (an irregularly shaped pearl, possibly the source of the word "baroque")
and the French "rocaille" (a popular form of garden or interior ornamentation using
shells and pebbles).
Nung nagsisimula palang makilala ang Rococo style nakatanggap ng mga harsh criticism about
sa rococo style.
 The style received harsh criticism and was seen by some to be superficial and of poor
taste, especially when compared to neoclassicism; despite this, it has been praised for
its aesthetic qualities.

round pearl is the reanisannce which is perfect and precise.
The misshapen pearl is the Baroque- and Baroque word comes from Portuguese word

SLIDE 6: Characteristics of Rococo Style

 Light-hearted, flirty, graceful figures.
  Pale colors and Cherubs were common.
 Romantic depictions of luxuriously attired gentlemen and ladies indulging in leisure
activities.
 Love was a common theme: romantic love, motherly love, even erotic love.
 Backgrounds often included delicate depictions of nature (wispy trees, flowers, etc.)
 Portraiture very popular.

SLIDE 7 - 8: DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BAROQUE AND ROCOCO STYLE

 While Baroque art was serious, Rococo was playful. Baroque art depicted heroism,
martyrs and biblical stories, but Rococo painters showed lovey-dovey themes and
aristocracy at play.
 Larger-than-life religious or political themes were replaced with light-hearted themes
revolving around fun, lovers and naughty behavior. Baroque used dark colours,
Rococo used soft and bright colours in a very optimistic “life is beautiful” ambiance.
 Also, unlike Baroque, Rococo art was not intellectually deep, provocative or
challenging. Even the size of paintings went through a drastic change, Baroque
paintings had to be large and easily visible from afar, but Rococo paintings were much
smaller in order to make them ideal for decoration. Purely decorative Rococo art is the
reason why it did not earn much respect from art scholars.
 Neither the Church nor governments played any role in the rise of this art movement.
It was a sign that French society was less devoted to religion. While some churches
were built in and decorated in the Rococo style, generally the religious element was
nonexistent in Rococo paintings. Difference between Baroque & Rococo Art…

SLIDE 10: SALON

Ang Rococo Style madalas makikita sa Salon. Ano nga ba ang Salon? Kayo classmates pag
Naririnig nyo ang Salitang salon anong unang pumapasok sa isip nyo?
Hindi diba PARLOR agad ang nasa isip natin pag naririnig natin ang salitang salon?
BUT, During Rococo period Salon has a different meaning and Notion.
  In French, the word salon simply means living room or parlor.
  Rococo salons refer to central rooms that are designed in the Rococo style.
 the notion of the ‘salon’ is an Enlightenment era ideal that transformed the living
room into the central space for aristocracy to entertain guests and engage in
intellectual conversation.
 The idea that one’s architectural surroundings should encourage a way of life, or
reflect one’s values, was the philosophy of the time.

SLIDE 11: (INTERIOR DESIGN)

HERE ARE THE MOST FAMOUS EXAMPLE OF ROCOCO SALON (NA MAKIKITA PARIN
HANGGANG NGAYON SA FRANCE
 Rococo interiors were most often decorated as a whole – paintings, furniture, walls,
ceilings, metalwork and porcelain would present a unified ensemble.
 It was common for rooms decorated in the Rococo style to be decorated all over with
‘boiserie’ (bawa ze-re) – wooden paneling with decorative carvings.

The Salon de la Princesse is decorated with ornate boiserie that is emblematic of the
Rococo style in white and gold.

Rather than being hung, the paintings are incorporated as a cycle into the curved
walls and ceiling, which is painted a fanciful sky blue.

The curved shape of the room creates a more intimate, hallowed space rather than an
echoing hall, and the light – which would have been created by candles – would
glimmer from every element of the gilded details, creating a warm and cozy elegance.

AND THE OTHER ONE INTERIOR SALON DESIGN IS

THE Bureau Daton de L’hotel de Bourvallais

This Rococo salon exemplifies the serpentine design work and heavy use of gold that were both typical
of the Rococo style.

Serpentine- is Sinuous; (sen yu wuz )curving in alternate directions.

SLIDE 13: FURNITURE

 Rococo in furniture and the decorative arts was all about artistic panache (PANASH)
and sumptuousness (sampt-shu-wuz-ness)
 Workmanship of the highest quality was of the utmost importance in creating
furniture and objects. It was common for several kinds of workmen to work together
on just one single piece!

 The best example of Rococo furniture and design is THE COMMODE or THE
CHEST DRAWER by CHARLES CRESSENT.
 The commode or Chest drawer is crafted in oak, pine, satin and purpleheart woods, gilt bronze
and marble

The commode features curved, tapered

legs, which are called ‘cabriole’ legs. These kinds of legs can be found in lots of
pieces of Rococo style furniture, and as time went on they became taller, more
slender and daintier in contrast to the large, bulbous shape they support.

The commode is highly decorated, and would have been worked on by several
craftsmen – a draughtsman to design the piece, a carpenter who would have made
the design and the parquetry, and a bronzeworker who would have created the ormolu
mounts.

Another feature of the Rococo that became popular was asymmetrical elements in
furniture and design. Pieces aimed for a harmonious ‘balance’ that is more often found
in nature rather than rigorous, symmetrical perfection.

In this commode, the gilt bronze mounts are crafted with a ‘freehand’ effect, meaning
that while they aim to be roughly symmetrical, subtle differences by the hand of the
maker form part of the charm and elegance of the piece, highlighting the carefree
informality that was so inherent to the style.

And Here some other

furniture in rococo’s time

SLIDE 15: May trivia ako about sa mga piecies of Rococo style

Alam nyo ba na ang “Walt Disney's classic film 'Beauty and the Beast' was heavily influenced by
the Rococo style, and many of the pieces of talking furniture in the film are almost exact copies of
real pieces made by 18th Century makers!
Belle Meeting Madame De Garobe (Left pic) The Palace of Nymphenburg (Right pic)
The set design does a wonderful job of showcasing the other important features of Rococo, in everything from the
tapestries to the furniture. Even the singing ‘Madame de Garderobe’ is a vision of the dreamy French style. With
soft pastel blue color, and regal gilding- she’s’ got all the ‘must haves’ for lavish furnishings of the era.

Belle’s Rococo Bedroom

Her new room features a breathtaking canopy bed, wrapped in gorgeous golden scrollwork. The room’s rounded
shape, with floor to ceiling mirrors bring much needed light to an otherwise gloomy castle.

Since glass was an expensive and elegant way to decorate at the time, mirrored walls with a ‘window effect’ became
a favorite of wealthy French royalty.

These mirrored “windows” looked so impressive that an entire hall in the Palace of Versailles is dedicated to their
beauty. The Rococo style continued to gain popularity, spreading quickly throughout Europe to the Palace of
Nymphenberg.

This elegant palace near Munich features a stunning hall, which is a dead ringer for Belle’s fancy dwelling in the
film.

SLIDE 16: PAINTING

 Rococo painting was characterized by an abundance of intricate details, curves and
counter-curves which dance across the canvas, resulting in a very ‘busy’ appearance
 Within this fanciful, ‘busy’ style, portraits, pastoral scenes and mythological subjects
with themes of love would often form the bulk of works produced.
 One of the most notable painters in the Rococo style was Francois Boucher (French,
1703-1770), who enjoyed the patronage of King Louis XV and his mistress, Madame de
Pompadour. Madame de Pompadour was a great patron of the arts, and one of the
most famous fans of the Rococo movement.

SLIDE 17- 18 BOO-SHEY PAINTINGS

Boucher BOO-SHEY painted Madame de Pompadour several times throughout the

period, as well as the light-hearted, mythological subjects which characterized the
Rococo style.

Whilst it was regarded as unflattering for

any Royal portraits to include nudity, it is
easy to see a distinctive style in both of
these paintings by Boucher (Boo-shey).
They are both painted with pastels and
shades of pink against mystical green
and blue backgrounds.

The portrait of Madame de Pompadour is full of

flowers and intricate, delicate foliage. La
Toilette de Venus includes winged cherubs, a
similar garden setting in the background, and
many intricate and delicate items at the feet of
the nude Venus.

Both paintings are fanciful and feminine,

celebrating a traditional womanly persona
and it was very fashionable in the
18th Century and characterised the Rococo
style.

SLIDE 19-20 : ANTOINE WATTOW PAINTING

And Here’s another distinctive

style within Rococo painting.
the ‘fete (Faith) galante.
FAITH GALANTE - is a French
term that loosely means
‘courtship party’. This phrase
came into use to describe the
paintings of “ANTOINE
WATTOW” Antoine Watteau
(French, 1684-1721)
ROCOCO ART, SCULPTURE AND PORCELAIN
Fete (faith) galante paintings are characterized by an outdoors composition, usually a
gathering or a picnic, with upper class ladies and gentlemen engaging in flirtations and
conversations.

This painting is “The Embarkation for Cythera . It is also known as Voyage to

Cythera and Pilgrimage to the Isle of Cythera.

 Embarkation for Cythera depicts a pretty, pastel-shaded landscape with flying cherubs
to the center left
 adding a mythological element that is a common theme in most Rococo paintings.
 Many commentators note that it depicts a departure from the island of Cythera, the birthplace
of Venus, thus symbolizing the temporary nature of human happiness.
(ang Paniniwala dati na ang island na to is a Birthpalce of Venus)
SINO BA SI VENUS? – VENUS IS A ROMAN GODDESS. WHOSE FUNCTIONS ENCOMPASSED LOVE,

SLIDE 21- 23: SCULPTURE

 The Classically influenced style of sculpture that was popular during the preceding
Baroque continued to be created during the Rococo movement.
(HABANG TUMATAGAL MAS NAKIKILA LALO ANG LIGHTER SUBJECT AND MAS LALO NAGING
PLAYFUL AND FANICIFUL MGA ART

 Once again, Madame de Pompadour was one of the greatest patrons of Rococo style
sculpture, and she commissioned many pieces for the orangery of the Chateau (SHA-
TOW) de Choisy (SHWA-ZEE) where she would retire with her lover, King Louis XV of
France.

And here’s the 2 example of romantic sculpture

created by edme Boushardon- a French Sculptor

 The sculpture of Cupid Carving Darts of Love from the Club of Hercules (HERKULEZ)for
the orangery garden, which is influenced by the Baroque and Classical sculpture, yet
has a delicate, romantic theme of love triumphing over all strength.
 Bouchardon sculpted many light-hearted sculptures, such as the Genius of Abundance,
a small, delicate child who gracefully proffers fruits, representing the beauty of
abundance.

SLIDE 24-26: PORCELAIN

Rococo sculptural style actually came from the manufactory of porcelain at Sevres (SEV-RA)
in FRANCE

 The Sevres Porcelain Manufactory was bought by Madame de Pompadour in 1756,

and from then it enjoyed Royal patronage, which, along with the fine works it created,
was instrumental to its success.
 The sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet (French, 1716-1791) became creative director
at the Sevres factory in 1759, and he was influenced heavily by small, delicate
porcelain figures which were made in Bavaria.

Actually this Rococo sculptural type or style was came from the manufactory of

 The Sevra Porcelain Manufactory was bought by Madame de Pompadour in 1756, and

 The sculptor Etienne-Maurice Falconet (French, 1716-1791) became creative director
at the Sevra factory in 1759, and he was influenced heavily by small, delicate porcelain
figures which were made in Baveria.

 He began to create larger-scale works in this style as a sculptor, and soon the Sevra
Manufactory began to produce small-scale porcelain works influenced by the Bavarian
models which were adapted into the French Rococo style.
 Baverian Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory made figures in glazed and painted
porcelain, the French Rococo pieces made by the Sevra Manufactory were of white,
bisque porcelain, and looked more like real sculptures.
 They were delicately small and charming and were very popular in the 18th Century as
table-top decorations.

SLIDE 27-28 : ARCHITECTURE

 Rococo architecture was a lighter, more graceful, yet also more elaborate version of
Baroque architecture, which was ornate and austere. (os-tir)
 Rococo emphasized the asymmetry of forms, while Baroque was the opposite.
(ANG ASYMMETRY PO AY LACK OF EQUALITY BETWEEN 2 SIDE OR ASPECT OBJECT O NG BAGAY)

 The Baroque was more serious, placing an emphasis on religion, and was often
characterized by Christian themes. Rococo architecture was an 18th century, more
secular, adaptation of the Baroque that was characterized by more light-hearted and
jocular themes.
 Other elements belonging to the architectural style of Rococo include numerous
curves and decorations, as well as the use of pale colors.

AND Here is one the example of ROCOCO Architecture

The CATHERINE PALACE IN SARKOE SELO, SAINT
PETERSBURG

 The building was commissioned by Catherine I in 1717. Yohan Fredrick Brown-stayn was

the architect charged with designing her summer residence. It was expanded in 1743
by Empress Anna, but later renovated in favor of a much grander version requested
by Empress Elizabeth. This new structure built in the Rococo style was designed by her
court architect, Francesso Bartolomeo Rastrelli.
 The 325-meter long palace took four years to build and was completed in 1756.
 Its façade (FE-SAD) was once again changed by Catherine the Great.
 This palace was one of the only ones to be constantly renovated based on the style of
the time. Following the Revolution of 1917, the palace began to be used as a museum.
It was severely damaged during World War II and it is still being restored up until the
present.

TRIVIA:

of red AND During Rococo period, A lot of men encourage to paint their room
because they are viewed it as having “good energy”.

TO END MY REPORT
ROCOCO ART, SCULPTURE AND PORCELAIN
I COULD SAY THAT THE ROCOCO STYLE TODAY HAS A GREAT IMPACT AND INFLUENCES INTERMS OF
FAHION DESIGN, ART, ARCHITECTURE AND INTERIOR DESIGN, FURNITURE AND CINEMAS WITH
ELEGANCE AND RICH HISTORY. AND ALSO, It has become one of the most well-loved styles in the
history of art and design
