Midterm Exam

Instructions: Copy and solve each problem as neatly as possible and show complete
solution. Round everything to four decimal places and box all final answers. Solution should
be handwritten. Provide correct illustration for each problem before presenting your solution.

1. A paint mixture containing 25% of a pigment and the balance water sells for P19.00/kg and a
mixture containing 12.0% pigment sells for P12.00/kg. If a paint retailer produces a blend
containing 18.0% pigment, how much (P/kg) should it be sold to yield a 35% profit? Use 100kg of
product as basis.

2. Strawberries contain about 15 wt% solids and 85 wt% water. To make strawberry jam, crushed
strawberries and sugar are mixed in a 45: 55 mass ratio, and the mixture is heated to evaporate
water until the residue contains one-third water by mass. Calculate how many pounds of
strawberries are needed to make a pound of jam. (use 1 lb of jam as a basis)

3. Ipil-ipil leaves will be dried in a moving train of tray dryers. The wet leaves containing 75% water
and is to be dried to 15% in trays measuring 1m x 1.5m. The wet leaves are spread out in the tray
to a uniform thickness of 8cm and the wet leaves have a specific gravity of 0.75. Calculate the
following:
a) The amount of water removed (in terms of MT)/ MT of product.
b) The number of trays needed to produce 1 MT of dried leaves.

4. Wet air containing 4.0 mole % water vapor is passed through a column of calcium chloride pellets.
The pellets adsorb 97.0 mole % of the water and none of the other constituents of the air. The
column packing was initially dry and had a mass of 3.40 kg. Following 5.0 hours of operation, the
pellets are reweighed and found to have a mass of 3.54 kg. Calculate a) the molar flowrate
(mole/hr) of the feed gas b) molar flowrate (mole/hr) of the product gas and c) mole fraction of
the water vapor in the product gas.

5. A gas mixture at 300K and 1 bar analyzing by volume 20% N2 and 80% CH4 is subjected to
liquefaction at the rate of 1500 kg/hr. It is found that only 30% (weight) of the entering gas is
liquefied and the concentration of N2 in the liquid is 60% by weight. The unliquefied gas leaves
the unit at 273K and 1 bar. Determine (a) the volume of the unliquefied gas, m3/hr (b) the
composition of the gas leaving expressed as volume %.

6. 4500 kg/h of a solution that is 1/3 K2CrO4 by mass is joined by a recycle stream containing 36.4 %
K2CrO4, and the combined stream is fed into an evaporator. The concentrated stream leaving the
evaporator contains 49.4% K2CrO4, and is in turn fed into a crystallizer in which it is cooled. The
cooling causes crystals of K2CrO4 to precipitate. The crystals are then filtered out of the solution.
The “filter cake” consists of K2CrO4 crystals and a solution that contains 36.4 % K2CrO4 by mass,
such that the crystals account for 95 % of the total mass of the filter cake. The “filtrate” solution
that passes through the filter also contains 36.4 % K2CrO4, and is recycled. Determine the
following:
a) Mass rate of evaporation
b) Mass rate of production of K2CrO4 crystals
c) Mass feed rates that the evaporator and the crystallizer must handle
d) Recycle ratio. The recycle ratio = (mass of recycle)/ (mass of fresh feed).

7. Fresh atmospheric air mixed with recycled air is heated to 349K and admitted to a drier at 101.3
KPa at a rate of 100 m3/min. The relative humidity of the air entering the drier is 7.5%.
Atmospheric air is at 302K and has a relative humidity of 30%. The air leaves the drier at 306K and
90% relative humidity, a portion of which is recycled and the other portion discarded. The vapour
pressures of water are 4KPa at 302K, 5KPa at 306K and 40KPa at 349K. Calculate the following:
a) The ratio of wet recycle stream to wet fresh stream.
b) The mass of dry air to be fed to the drier to remove one kilogram of water in the drier.
c) The rate at which water is removed in kg/min.
