Main ideas and themes in “A Midsummer night’s dream”

There are some main ideas in the play, like “Love’s difficulty”, “Magic”, “Dreams”,
“Jealousy”, “Mischief”, “Transformation” and others.
The “Love’s difficulty” theme is the main of them, because “The course of true love
never did run smooth,” comments Lysander in the play. In the text of “A Midsummer
night’s dream” is written/told of the asymmetrical love among the young: Hermia
loves Lysander, Lysander loves Hermia, Helena loves Demetrius, and Demetrius
loves Hermia instead of Helena.
The “Magic” theme is that which brings funny and hilarious atmosphere in the
play. It is also center of the fantastic atmosphere in “A Midsummer night’s
dream”. Shakespeare uses magic to highlight the supernatural power of love.
As the tittle says, the “Dreams” theme is important in the play. The characters
also use dreaming to explain a bizarre situation in which they are involved.
The theme of “Jealousy” operates in both human and magic world. It is obviously
seen most among the quarter of Athenian lovers – Helena feels jealous of Hermia,
who has two lovers, and Demetrius feels jealous of Lysander.
The “Mischief” theme is primarily associated with the forest and the fairies who
live there. According to the traditional British folklore, fairies are master mischief
makers. The fairy Puck is the play’s main maker of mischief.
Most of the examples in the “Transformation” theme are related to emotional
and physical transformations. These transformations add humorous chaos to the
play and make its happy ending possible. Most of the transformations that are
made in the play derive from fairy magic.
There are still some other themes, but I got to my limits, maybe I could write
about them next time. 😉
