Working Memory Capacity, Executive Control, and Moral Judgment. Psychological Science, 19(6),

2. What did the experimenter do?

This experiment ultimately was able to test if killing one person over another in a specific
situation was deemed as morally correct or not. They use 24 type of situations and based people
on there working memory capacity through different task.

What is the overarching question?

The experimenters predicted that people with high working memory capacity will make
better decision morally in a dilemma given. They will test this by using a dual process theory and
giving different task in each dilemma to score their working memory capacity. They will also try
to test whether there is a distinction between impersonal or personal dilemma will affect the new
form of their survival. The final test is to evaluate the morality of the decision one would make
in the dilemmas given. Overall, they are wanting to test the working memory capacity, the
distinction of personal to impersonal effect on one’s decisions making, and the relevancy of
moral decision making in a dilemma one is placed in.

What are the Independent and Dependent variables?

The independent variable is the students taking 2 test on a computer and all receiving the
same questions to test them. The dependent variable is the array of answers that can be selected
in each of the question given.

What is the basic design (within, between subjects, mixed model) ?

Due to the question being randomly assigned to each student I believe this model is
within-subject model.

Briefly describe the experiment

The experiment start as the subjects will be guided on 2 example questions of the dilemma
questions. They will further continue the 24 questions given on a regular black and white
computer setting. Subject will later be question on a health screening questionnaire to make sure
each subject fit the criteria of the experiment. The most interesting part about this experiment is
that each subject doesn’t need to use a mouse but the use a series of keys to choose their answer
for each dilemma.
3. What did they find?

The found that impersonal killing was seen as more appropriate than personal killing. That
the decisions of the students with higher working memory capacity scores were less significant
than those who had lower working memory scores. They also concluded that killing to save
oneself and others was judged to be more appropriate than killing to only save others. They also
deemed that killing someone whose death wasn’t avoidable was judged to be more appropriate
than killing someone whose death was avoidable. The response time of the students was also
calculated as well. The saw that students with high working memory capacity would answer fast
than those with lower working capacity.

What are the main results and/or outcomes from the research?

The main result found was that subject would deem as appropriate as saving themselves and
others collectively.

4. What does it mean?

These results seem to mean that students are more willing to safe themselves and help
others as well. However, they are so willing to be able to safe only everyone else to risk
their own life.

What is the take home message?

The take home message is that student who are able to have high working memory
capacity are confident in their responses and are able to solve dilemmas that may be morally
correct to them. This is due to their quick response time and the significant amount of students
would choose saving themselves and others along with them.

What do we know that we did not know before the research was conducted?

We know that students are fully selfish but when it comes to risking their own life they
are not willing to die for others.
