Preliminary Findings Report

The child I will be looking into is an eight-year-old, second grader, named Ella. Ella is
the oldest child of four, she has three younger sisters. On my first day in Ella’s class she was
eager to warm up to me and made no hesitations to engage in conversation. It is very evident that
Ella is a confident young girl, even when her answers are incorrect. My mentor teacher shared
with me that Ella has many friends and that she is not afraid to speak out in class. Ella does not
have an IEP and struggles to keep up with her peers when it comes to in class assignments.

I gave my student an interest inventory on September 14th, from this I was able to
determine a variety of things. Starting with her interests, Ella loves all things Harry Potter, her
favorite character is Harry as they have matching scars. Ella wants to be a cheerleading coach
when she grows up and a cheetah is her favorite animal. I was also able to determine that
Reading is her favorite subject, however she stated that she knows she is not the best at it, but
“she is learning”.

From how I set up my questions I can see Ella’s strengths. Some of Ella’s strengths
include, but are not limited to, following directions accurately, forming proper sentence
structure, provide supporting information, and punctuation. Question one on the interest
inventory asks Ella to write her five favorite foods, I provided six lines to see if she would write
six instead of five like the directions say. Ella made sure to count out load when she wrote her
fifth and states “This is the last one because 1...2...3...4...5”. She also asked whether she should
draw or label the answer to question two first. The question she asked showed attention to detail
and understanding of directions. Questions three through five ask Ella to respond to a question
and explain her answer, she was able to complete these questions on her own with very little
reminders from me to explain her answers. These answers were also written with proper
structure and punctuation.
Finally, the interest inventory had allowed me to see a few of Ella’s weaknesses. One of
the major errors that is very evident as soon as you see her inventory is that her spelling comes
from her sounding out each word incorrectly. For example, she spelled “pizza” “peza” because
this is how it is sounded out. When sounding out these words she touched each finger to keep
track of her letters. For example, she sounded pizza out like “pee-z-ah" which led to her spelling.
This is another weakness as she is unable to decode the spelling of words in any other way. This
lack of varied strategies she uses shows that she needs help developing more strategies. Ella also
was not able to correctly capitalize words at the beginning of sentences, which is a writing skill
that can be easily corrected.

Overall, Ella is an extremely intelligent second grader who needs to be taught how to use
different strategies in order to help her succeed in different situations. Her confidence, yet
willingness to learn shows that she is able to hear feedback and make the necessary corrections
in order to learn.
