ITS Installation & Civil Specification & Guidelines-05

The document provides guidelines for laying fiber optic ducts for ITS projects. Key points include: 1) Ducts should curve naturally with radii of at least 15 meters and avoid standard pre-formed bends. 2) Ducts should be vertically and horizontally aligned throughout with gradients not exceeding 4%. 3) Warning tapes and pull ropes should be installed along the entire duct run. 4) Duct endings and branches require specialized chambers, and maximum turning radii. 5) Covers should be marked appropriately and ducts tested after installation.

Guidelines for laying of ducts for Fiber Optic Cable for ITS

1. Standard, pre-formed bends should not be used. In the event the duct need to take turn, it
should be formed naturally by gradually adjusting the lengths of the ducts and providing at
least 15 meter radius.

2. In ideal condition, all ducts should be aligned vertically and horizontally throughout the
length of project. The gradient, if any should not exceed 4%

3. Warning tapes should be placed along the entire length of ducts. Technical details of the
warning tape are given as a separate drawing.

4. All ducts should be provided with nylon pull ropes of minimum 10 mm dia.

5. The ducts endings within the cable chambers or elsewhere should be matched and need to
be in the same level.

6. Where ever a branching is included (e.g. a duct crossing across the road) a Type B chamber
with inner dimensions 1 M x 1 M need to be constructed, but with 600 x 600 mm cover and
frame. To achieve maximum turning radius, ducts may be terminated close to diagonally
opposite corners.

7. All cable chamber covers should have marking “ITS – Optical Fiber Cable” as per the art work
separately provided.

8. After completion of the duct laying, each stretch between the cable chambers should be
tested for damages or discontinuity using a 80 mm dia mandrel as per the details provided
separately.

9. All duct endings including those within the cable chambers should be covered with end caps
to protect against ingress of dust and water.
4. SPECIFICATION FOR SUPPLY OF ACCESS COVERS FOR
TRAFFIC SIGNALS.

Specification

Section 34 of the relevant specification for these items is provided herewith. Any variation
from the specification given above should be clearly stated in the quotation.

Product catalogues or brochures should be provided and shall be submitted in a separate

envelope bearing the same Quotation Ref. Such items shall be signed and stamped. The
model number, manufacturer's detail and country of origin/manufacture should be clearly
stated in the quotation/brochures.

Samples and Test Certificates

Each unit should have a batch number embossed on it and this need to be specified in the
test certificates.
Testing Before Release of Purchase Order
The successful supplier need to submit a sample within 15 days for one or both the type of
covers for approval. Also a test certificate for the covers from a testing laboratory in Bahrain
approved by this Ministry should be submitted in original for the sample supplied, after
which the order will be released.
Testing of Random Samples before release of payment
Random sample from each consignment received will be selected and the supplier should
arrange for testing these covers at his cost from one of our approved testing laboratories.
Consignment will be accepted and payment will be released only after the receipt of such
certificates.
SECTION 34

34.1 PARTICULAR SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE SUPPLY OF CABLE DUCT AND CABLE
JUNCTION BOX ACCESS COVERS AND FRAMES (Cast Iron or Ductile Iron)

34.1.1 GENERAL

34.1.2 SCOPE

The works covered by this Section consist of the fabrication and supply of access covers,
gratings/frames and gullies.

To be installed in connection with Roads Directorate’s Traffic Signal systems within the
carriageways of roads, hard shoulders, car parking areas, footpaths, pedestrian areas as
specified in the Particular Contract Specification and in accordance with the relevant British
and European Standards.

APPLICABLE STANDARDS

Materials, testing and workmanship shall comply with the following or other approved
International Standards and Codes of Practice:

EN 1994 Gully Tops and Manhole Tops for Vehicular and

124 Pedestrian Areas – Design Requirements, Type Testing,
Marking, Quality Control
ISO 1988 Grey Iron – Classification
185
ISO 1987 Spheroidal Graphite Cast Iron – Classification
1083
ISO 1980 Structural Steel
630
ISO 1991 Cast Carbon Steels for General Engineering Purposes
3755

34.1.3 SAMPLES AND TESTING

a. The supplier shall submit to the Engineer samples of the materials proposed. The
Engineer’s consent in writing shall be obtained for such samples and sources of
supply and no changes shall subsequently be made without the Engineer’s
approval in writing.

b. The Engineer shall have access to all sources of supply for the purpose of inspection
and testing sample. The cost of the provision and testing of samples shall be the
Contractor’s responsibility.
34.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR CABLE DUCT AND CABLE JUNCTION BOX
ACCESS COVERS AND FRAMES.

34.2.1 Access Covers and Frames.

Unless otherwise specified in this standard or approved by the Engineer, access covers and
frames shall be of cast grey iron to EN 124, 1994 and shall be to the dimensions shown in
the sections 34.2.2 to 34.2.5. Covers and frames having minimum clear openings outside
the ranges of EN 124, 1994 shall nevertheless comply with the provisions of the Standard
where applicable.

Covers and frames shall be:

a. Heavy duty EN 124, Group 4 (Class D 400), for use in carriageways of the roads
(including pedestrian streets), hard shoulders and parking areas, for all types of
road vehicles.

b. Medium duty EN 124, Group 2 (Class B 125), for use in footways, pedestrian areas
and comparable areas, car parks and car parking areas.

c. Light duty EN 124, group 1 (Class A 15) for areas, which can only be used by
pedestrians and pedal cyclists.

34.2.2 Access Covers and Frames Dimensions

34.2.3 EN 124 Group 1 (Class A 15)

Covers and Frames with the stipulated minimum clear opening 600mm x 600mm or less
shall, unless detailed as non-rocking, be seated in a sealing groove and shall be sand and
gas tight.

34.2.4 EN 124 Group 2 (Class B 125)

Covers and Frames with the stipulated minimum clear opening 600mm x 600mm or less
shall, unless detailed as non-rocking, be seated in a sealing groove and shall be sand and
gas tight. Non-rocking covers shall be as specified in paragraph (34.2.5) below.
34.2.5 EN 124 Group 4 (Class D 400)

Heavy Duty Covers and Frames with a stipulated minimum clear opening of 600mm x
600mm shall be double triangular heavy duty covers, with their frames, incorporate no-rock
triangular point suspension (machine faced seating are not acceptable). Seating points
shall bear sloping faces to minimise the risk of sand and grit lodging on them. Frames shall
incorporate a sealing lip formed accurately around the bottom inner section of the frame to
accept an RTR sand and gas tight sealing plate, which shall be supplied with the cover, and
frame.

34.2.6 Keyways

Covers shall have keyways closed on the underside with no projections above cover level
and positioned such that each cover balances and can be lifted in a horizontal plane. Double
triangular covers shall have two keyways on each half cover. Frames shall incorporate
recesses for prising bars.

34.4.5 Lifting Keys.

Where sets of lifting keys are required, keys shall be handed over to the Engineer.

34.4.6 Frame Height and Rim Width

Frame height and rim outside on

the frame should not be narrow.
Enough space for packing concrete
to fix it firmly should be provided.
We expect at least 60 mm height
and width externally for the frame
as shown in the adjacent figure.

34.4.7 Marking on the cover

Covers should be the marked both in English and Arabic as per the artwork provided below.
Details of the letter sizes will provided to successful supplier to suit to the cover supplied
