measurement (M7ME-IIb-2).

Specific Objectives:
After the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. determine the equivalent measure of one unit to
another;
2. convert measurements from one unit to another;
3. solve problems involving conversion of units of
measurement; and
4. appreciate the importance of conversion of units of
measurement in real-life.

Time Allotment: 4hours

Key Concepts

A. Conversion of Unit of Measurements for Length

The fundamental unit of length in the metric system is the

meter. The following table shows the relationship between meter
and other units of length.
Fraction or Multiple of
Unit Symbol
1 Meter
1 kilometer km 1000 m
1 hectometer hm 100 m

1 dekameter dam 10 m
1 meter m 1m
1 decimeter dm 0.1 m
1 centimeter cm 0.01 m
1 millimeter mm 0.001 m

Because of the special relationships among units in the

metric system, it is quite easy to express a measure of length in
terms of a different unit simply by multiplying by powers of ten.
For example, 1000 meters is a kilometer, 0.01 of a meter is a
centimeter, and 0.001 of a meter is a millimeter. The most
commonly used metric measures are the millimeter, centimeter,
meter, and kilometer.

To aid in converting from one unit of measure to another,

study the metric converter illustrated below.

km hm dam m dm cm mm

The metric converter is based primarily on the place-value

system. The number of equal spaces shown corresponds to the
powers of ten needed to convert one unit to another. Thus, to
convert kilometer (km) to meter (m), count the number of spaces
from km to m in the metric converter. Since there are 3 spaces
between these units, move the decimal point in a given number
3 places to the right. Similarly, move 3 spaces or 3 decimal places
to the left of a given number to convert millimeter (mm) to meter
(m).

Illustrative Examples:

1. Convert 3.4325 km to m.

Author: MAC PHILIP M. RAZ

School/Station: GAMUT NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-TAGO Page 3
Division: SURIGAO DEL SUR
Email Address: macphilip.saz@deped.gov.ph
Solution:

km hm dam m dm cm mm

The 3 spaces between kilometer and meter in the

metric converter require a movement of 3 decimal
places to the right (big to small unit). So, move the
decimal point in the given number 3 decimal places to
the right. Thus,
3.4325 km = 3432.5 m.

To check, recall that 1 km = 1000 m. Hence,

1000 m
3.4325 km × = 3432.5 m.
1 km

2. Convert 2678 mm to m.
Solution:

km hm dam m dm cm mm
The 3 spaces between millimeter and meter in the
metric converter require a movement of 3 decimal places
to the left (small to big unit). So, move the decimal point in
the given number 3 decimal places to the left. Thus,
2678 mm = 2.678 m.
To check, recall that 1 mm = 0.001 m. Hence,
0.001 m
2678 mm × = 2.678 m
1 mm

B. Conversion of Unit of Measurements for Volume

The metric system uses the liter (L) as the fundamental unit
of volume. It represents the volume of a cube that measures 10
cm or 1 dm on each edge.

Very small volumes are measured in milliliters, like liquid

medicine in milliliter bottles. Large volumes are measured in
cubic meters (m3), like water in tanks, reservoirs, or swimming
pools.
A liter cube can be filled with a 10 x 10 array of centimeter
cubes to cover its bottom, and 10 layers of this array can fill the
liter cube to the top. Thus, 1 liter or 1 cubic decimeter is
equivalent to 1000 cm3.
The most commonly used volume units in the metric system
are shown in the table below.
Unit Symbol Fraction or
Multiple of 1 Liter
1 milliliter (cubic centimeter) mL (cm3) 0.001 L
1 liter (cubic decimeter) L (dm3) 1L
1 kiloliter (cubic meter) kL (m3) 1000 L

Units of volume can also be changed from one unit to

another using the metric converter. Only this time, the decimal
point is moved thrice the number of spaces between units since
volume involves three dimensions.

Illustrative Example:

Convert 25 970 cm3 to m3.

Solution:

km hm dam m dm cm mm

Author: MAC PHILIP M. RAZ

School/Station: GAMUT NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL-TAGO Page 5
Division: SURIGAO DEL SUR
Email Address: macphilip.saz@deped.gov.ph
The 2 spaces between centimeter and meter in the
metric converter require a movement of 2 decimal places
to the left (small to big unit). Since volume involves 3
dimensions, triple the required decimal places (2 x 3 = 6).
Hence, move the decimal point in the given number 6
places to the left. Thus,
025 970 cm3 = 0.025970 m3.
To check:
1m 1m 1m
25 970 𝑐𝑚3 × × × = 0.02597 𝑚3
100 cm 100 cm 100 cm

In measuring the volume of liquids, a

graduated cylinder is used. Check first
the number of lines in each unit
division, then pour the liquid into the
cylinder. When reading, the eyes
should be on the level of the lower
meniscus to lessen the error.
Meniscus is the surface of a still liquid
in a container. This surface forms a
curve when the liquid touches the side
of the container.
At home, measuring cups are used instead of the
graduated cylinder.

C. Conversion of Unit of Measurements for Mass

The mass of an object is the amount of matter it contains.

The basic unit of mass in the metric system is gram (g).

The following table shows the relationship between gram

and other units of mass.

Fraction of Multiple of
Unit Symbol
1 Gram
1 tonne (metric ton) t 1 000 000 g (1000 kg)

1 dekagram dag 10 g

1 gram g 1g

1 decigram dg 0.1 g

1 centigram cg 0.01 g

1 milligram mg 0.001 g

A kilogram is the mass of 1 liter of water in its densest

1
state. The mass of a milliliter of water is 1000 of a kilogram,
which is called a gram (g).

A platform balance is an instrument used in measuring the
mass of small objects. It is usually accurate to the nearest 0.01
grams. Before using a platform balance, it is important to make
sure that the instrument is clean and dry, and the pointer at its
position of rest. The object to be weighed is place on ne pan and
the standard mass on the other. Keep on adding or removing the
standard mass until the two pans are balanced and the pointer is
at its position of rest.
A weighing scale for commercial use is more convenient
and easier to manipulate, but not as accurate. The object to be
weighed is placed on a pan, and the pointer of the instrument
moves through the unit divisions to the point that indicates the
mass of the object.

D. Conversion of Unit of Measurements for Temperature

The degree Celsius is a unit of measure for temperature. It

is named after the Swedish astronomer, Ander Celsius, who
devised the Celsius scale in 1742.
Originally called centigrade, two reference temperatures
are used:
1. The freezing point of water (00C); and
2. The boiling point of water (1000C).

A metric thermometer used in measuring temperature is
divided in intervals between the freezing and boiling points.
Degree Celsius can be converted into degree Fahrenheit
(named after German instrument maker, Gabriel Fahrenheit),
English equivalent of Celsius.

E. Conversion of Unit of Measurements for Time

Primitive men used to tell time by the position of the sun,

the stars and the moons, and the behaviour of animals. They used
the sundial, the water clocks, and hourglass for hundreds of
years until the invention of the mechanical clocks, the stately
grandfather clocks, the quartz and digital watches, and more
recently, the atomic clocks.

Time is measured by the rotation of Earth on its axis

(making one full day) and its complete revolution around the sun
1
(making one year) in 365 days. This means that in the period it
4
1
takes earth to circle the sun once, Earth makes 365 turns on its

axis. Four one-fourth make up a day (added to February), that is
why leap year occurs every four years.
The following table shows the units used to measure time
with their corresponding equivalent factor.

1 minute (min) 60 seconds (s)

1 hour (hr) 60 minutes

1 day (d) 24 hours

1 week (wk) 7 days

1 month (mo) 30 days

1 year (yr) = 12 months = 365 days = 52 weeks

1 leap year 366 days

1 decade 10 years

1 score 20 years

1 century 100 years

1 millennium 1000 years

Illustrative Examples:
A. How many hours are there in a week?
