Scientists have known for some time about Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD):
a form of depression caused by lack of light in winter, and thought to explain the
relatively high suicide rates in countries such as Sweden, where during parts of
the year days are very short. However, recent research has shown that those
working night shifts in factories can have the same problem, leading to stress
and depression. The problem can be overcome by illuminating workplaces with
lights three times brighter, making workers feel happier and more alert

The Pitcairn Islands are located in the South Pacific Ocean, about halfway
between Peru and New Zealand. The larger island of Pitcairn was discovered in
1767 by the British and settled in 1790 by the mutineers from the English ship
'Bounty' and their Tahitian companions. Pitcairn was the first Pacific island to
become a British colony (in 1838) and today remains the last vestige of the
British Empire in the South Pacific. The population of about 50 are the
descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian wives. English is the
official language, but many islanders communicate in Pitcairnese (a pidgin
language comprising of elements of 18th century English and a Tahitian
dialect).
The inhabitants of this tiny island exist on fishing, subsistence farming,
handicrafts, and postage stamps. The fertile soil of the valleys produces a wide
variety of fruits and vegetables, including citrus, sugarcane, watermelons,
bananas, yams, and beans. Bartering is an important part of the economy. The
major sources of revenue are the sale of postage stamps to collectors and the
sale of handicrafts to passing Answer ships

The Black Death is the name of a disastrous plague that broke out in Europe in
1348. At that time, poor people lived in the manors of their employers. This was
the feudal system, in which the poor people, known as serfs, virtually belonged
to their masters, the lords.
The serfs usually lived in cramped and unhygienic environments in the lords'
castles. Conditions were so bad that diseases spread very quickly. Black rats,
which bred very quickly in such environments, ran around, carrying diseases on
them. When these infected rats bit other rats or human beings, the diseases
were transmitted to their victims. This became so widespread that many villages
were wiped out and about one million people died in just two years because of
the Black Death.
Because of this, fewer and fewer people were willing to work or to live in the
lords' manors. They demanded to be allowed to rent their own land out of their
pay. This was the beginning of the abolition of the feudal system in Europe.
