Components
of Reading
Reading is built on five separate
components. These components
work together to create strong,
rich, and reliable reading abilities.

Phonics is the most basic component
of reading. It is the understanding that
there is a predictable relationship
between phonemes and graphemes.

Vocabulary is the knowledge of stored
information about the meaning and
pronunciations of words. It is the
range of words an individual is able to
understand and use in context.

Fluency is the ability to read with
speed, understanding, and
accuracy. It is the ability to make
sense of a text without having to
stop and decode each word.

Comprehension is a purposeful,
dynamic, and intelligent process that
happens previously, during and after
an individual reads a specific piece of
writing.
