COPENHAGEN METRO
AN INTEGRATED SOLUTION
Copenhagen Metro has since its opening in 2002 been an
integrated part of the Copenhagen public transport network of
buses, regional and S-trains and metro. It links Copenhagen
Airport with the city centre, the Municipality of Frederiksberg and
the new urban development area of Ørestad. The metro is partly
financed by the "new town" concept.

Copenhagen Metro transports more than 180,000 passengers

every day, and it operates 24/7 with only two minutes headway
during rush hour. The high-quality transport system won Best
Metro Worldwide at MetroRail 2008, and the driverless metro is
the fastest and easiest way to travel in the Danish capital.

Since 2009, two new lines of the Copenhagen Metro has

been under construction: A circular line under the ancient city,
and a line linking two major urban deveopment areas by the
Copenhagen harbour. In total, the Copenhagen metro will include
44 stations and 43 kilometres of double track.

COWI has been the leading consultant responsible for the project
management and the overall design coordination of the first two
lines as well as civil works design coordination and construction
management for the network.

CROSSRAIL WILL IMPROVE

London, United Kingdom

London’s ambitious Crossrail contract is Europe’s

biggest underground construction project and will build
a new east-west railway for London and the South East.
Designed to add ten per cent rail capacity and carry 200
million passengers a year, it is one of London’s most
impactful future-proofing projects.

There will be 42 kilometres of new infrastructure, of

which 21 are twin-bore tunnels under central London
and Docklands, designed by Donaldson Associates,
a COWI subsidiary. The twin-bore tunnels are made
with sprayed concrete lining (SCL). This technique not
only stabilises the excavated ground, but allows more
variation in the tunnel shape and diameter than with
bored tunnels.

Crossrail will enable more direct journeys and better

interchanges, making it easier and quicker for
passengers travelling across London and the South
East of England. It will also ease some of the enormous
burden on London’s transport network, improving the
commute for millions of passengers every day.
