Nature of Mathematics
INTRODUCTION:
- coming of the “Digital Age” contributes to our consumption and production of data
- despite of this fast-paced changing society, are we still appreciate the beauty of the things around us?
- we tend to identify and follow the PATTERNS, whether consciously or subconsciously, and because of this we are able to survive up to this era
- we will look at the patterns and regularities in the world and how mathematics played a huge part both in nature and human endeavor
PATTERN
- regular, repeated or recurring forms or designs
- to identify relationships and find logical
connections
Patterns in Nature: - to form generalizations and make predictions
Line / Bilateral Symmetry - (mirror images), divided along the mid-line/imaginary line
ex:
etc.
Rotational / Radial Symmetry - object is rotated in a certain direction around a point while achieving the same appearance
- Angle rotation P ( the smallest angle that a figure can be rotated while still preserving
ex: original formation)
P = 360
3 (petals/fold) 360
= 120
P= n where in n is the order (n-fold rotational symmetry)
Translational Symmetry - (repeating patterns) object is relocated to another position while maintaining its general or exact
orientation.
Ex: honeycomb
