Creation Lab Assignment

The NSU library has created a new space for using Educational Technologies. It is called the creation lab.
Your assignment is to go to this lab and spend some time with some of the technologies available there.
You can go to the creation lab with others in this class to work on this assignment, but each of you must
do all of the required activities individually.

3D Printer – A 3D printer allows you to create objects from designs. You must use the 3D printer in the
creation lab to create a small object and then show this object to your instructor in class. You can build
your own 3D model of something to create with tools like Google SketchUp and Makerbot Desktop, but
it is much easier to print something useful that someone else has already designed. Your assignment is
to find something on the thingiverse at http://www.thingiverse.com/ and then to have it printed using
the library’s 3D printer (Makerbot Replicator). The printing process itself may take hours to complete, so
plan for this, but you don’t have to be there the entire time while it prints. You should also try out the
3Doodler during this time. It is a 3D printing pen. Lynn Klundt (Library room 148, 605-626-7773,
lynn.klundt@northern.edu) is the librarian who can help you with this process. Here are the steps you
should follow.

1. Go to http://www.thingiverse.com/
2. Explore the different items on thingiverse and select one to print. Try to choose something that
is educational. You must also choose something that is small and doesn’t have too many
different parts to print.
3. When you have selected something, work with librarian Lynn Klundt to download and prepare
the design files
4. Print out the object and then show it to your instructor
5. Answer the following questions:

Paste a link to the item you printed out on https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2306030

Attach a picture of something you created with
the 3Doodler.

How would you use a 3D printer for education if I could use the 3D printer for a variety of reasons
you had your own in your classroom as a teacher when teaching kids. I think one use I would do is
(1-2 paragraphs)? have students pick out something that they are
interested. I would do this to draw their attention
towards it and really get them motivated to work
on something more advanced with it. After that I
would allow students when they have free time to
design an object on their own to be printed off.
This will engage their brain as if they were the
engineer building something. Students will really
show their artistic and creativity skills during this
process.
What are some other interesting ways 3D My high school best friend has a 3D printer at his
printers could be used inside or outside of house and many nights we spend at his house
education (1-2 paragraphs)? printing different objects out. We have created
things that we think could help us such as a phone
holder to hold your phone when it is charging. We
also tried to design something ourselves. We have
created Christmas gifts and decorations before
with the 3D printer which can be very fun to show
family.

Interactive Whiteboard – The creation lab has a new smart board setup for students to use and practice
with. Turn on the smartboard and then open up smart notebook on it. Draw on a blank page in smart
notebook and also erase some of your drawing. The smart exchange website has smart notebook lesson
files that other teachers have created. Next, download a sample smart notebook file from
exchange.smarttech.com and go through it. Finally answer the following questions:

What A student’s learning can be advanced in so many ways when using a smart board.

Chromebooks – The creation lab also includes some google chromebooks. Chromebooks are laptops
that run Google’s Chrome OS, which is different than Microsoft Windows or Apple MacOS. Many K-12
school districts have adopted chromebooks for every student because they are inexpensive and easy to
use. Get a chromebook and turn it on. Login with your google account information and the chromebook
will access your google drive. Open up a few of your google drive documents and also create a new
document on the chromebook. Share the document so that it is viewable by anyone.

Remember – The creation lab is an open space that you can return to any time and continue to explore,
