step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

“EXPLORE” are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each LAS. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if
you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
“ASSESSMENT” to self-check your learning.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also
provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they
can best help you on your home-based learning.

1 Composers

What is Contemporary Philippine music?

Contemporary music in the Philippines usually refers to compositions that

have adopted ideas and elements from twentieth century art music in the West, as
well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry. This
brief introduction covers only the works written by the art music composers.

What is traditional Filipino music?

Every country in the world has their own traditional music. Filipino
traditional music portrays the beliefs, customs, and traditions of the rural folks.
Traditional music may be classified such as to glorify the beauty of nature,
courtship music, or welcome songs.

What are the characteristics of traditional Philippine music?

Three main characteristics are exemplified by traditional ethnic music. The

first is the cantata form. A cantata is a vocal composition with an instrumental
accompaniment and often contains more than one movement. Another
characteristic that is exemplified is the use of acapella. An acapella song is a vocal
composition without instrumental accompaniment. Lastly, the sonata form is used
a composition for one or more solo instruments, one of which is usually a keyboard
instrument and usually consisting of three or four independent movements varying
in key, mood, and tempo (Anupol,2007)

 Francisco B. Buencamino Sr.(1883-1952)-

Born: November 5, 1883 in Bulacan. His father was Fortunato

Buencamino, a church organist and a head master. His mother was
Luisa Beltran, a noted singer. He studied music composition and
harmony at Liceo de Manila. Unfortunately, he was not able to finish his
studies. Many of his piano works haveea staple part of the Philippine
repertoire of today’s young students, specially Mayon, Larawan, and
Maligayang Bati. He also wrote several zarzuelas and kundimans. He
passed away on October 16, 1952 after which a posthumous award
honored him with the title “Outstanding Composer.”

 Francisco Santiago, PhD (1889-1947)-

Born: January 29, 1889 in Santa Maria, Bulacan to musically inclined

parents Felipe Santiago and Maria Santiago. He is known as the “Father
of the Kundiman” and belongs to the “Triumvirate Filipino Composers.”
He finished his music specialization at the American Conservatory of
Music in Chicago, where he obtained his Doctorate Degree in 1924. He is
Romantic in style, incorporating Western forms and techniques with folk
materials. He composed several works such as kundiman, symphonies,
piano concerti and other music pieces for piano, violin, and voice. He
became the first Filipino Director of the University of the
Philippines’(UP)Conservatory of Music. He died on September 28, 1947.

 Nicanor S. Abelardo(1893-1934) – Nicanor Santa Ana Abelardo

Born: in San Miguel de Mayumo, Bulacan on February 7, 1893. He is

one of the “Triumvirate of Filipino Composers’ which includes Antonio
Molina and Francisco Santiago. He studied at the Chicago Music
College and was influenced, and unusualby the musical styles of
Shoenberg, Hindemith, and Stravinsky. Abelardo developed a style
that combined European romanticism with chromaticism. His
composition contains hazy tones, dissonance and unusual chordal
combinations. Abelardo is also considered a composer in Romantic
style. His best-known compositions include Mutya ng Pasig, Nassan
Ka Irog, Cavatina for Vioncello, and Magbalik Ka Hirang. The main
theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines(Tanghalang Nicanor
Abelardo) and the building housing the College of Music in UP
Diliman(N. Abelardo Hall) are named in his honor. He died on March
21, 1934.

 Ryan Cipriano “Ryan” Cayabyab (1954)-

Born: May 5, 1954 in Manila. He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree

at the University of the Philippines’ College of Music and became a
faculty member for Composition at the same university. He is a popular
contemporary composer who also has a classical composition to his
credit, such as Misa, Four Poems for Soprano and Piano, and Te Deum.
His compositional style makes much use of syncopation, extended
chords, and chromatic harmony. He spans both popular and classical
worlds with his pop music, ballads, opera, zarzuelas, and orchestral
arrangements, masses, psalms,and choral compositions. His
compositions are mostly of traditional Western influence. Among his
numerous compositions are the award-winning Kay Ganda ng Ating
Musika (1978), Zarzuela (2003), the opera Spolarium with libretto and a
variety of choral piececs and song cycle.

2 New Music Composers

Composers of experimental New Music in the Philippines include Jose

Maceda, Lucrecia Kasilag, Ramon Santos, Manuel Maramba, Jerry Dadap,
Francisco Feliciano, Josefino “Chino” Toledo, and Jonas Baes. These composers
retained the Filipino spirit by incorporating traditional music forms as well as
indigenous rhythms and instruments in their compositions.

Jose M. Maceda- (1917-2004) National Artist for Music

Born: January 17, 1917 in Manila.

Musical style: profoundly influenced when he encountered the music of the indigenous tribes
of Mindoro in 1953. He then embarked on his life’s work, dedicated to the understanding and
preservation of Filipino traditional music. His extensive research and fieldwork resulted in an
immerse collection of recorded music taken from the remote mountain villages and far-flung
inland communities
Lucrecia R. Kasilag- in (1918-2008)
the Philippines. National Artist for Music
Compositions: Ugma-ugma, Agungan, Pagsamba, Ugnayan, Udlot-udlot.
Passed away: May 5, 2004 in Manila
Born: August 31, 1918 in San Fernando La Union.
Musical Style: demonstrated a fusion of Eastern and Western styles in using instruments,
melody, harmony, and rhythm. She is particularly known for incorporating indigenous Filipino
instruments into orchestral productions.
Compositions: Toccata for Percussion and Winds, The Legend of the Sarimanok,
Divertissement and Concertante, Dularawan.
Passed away: August 2008 in Manila.
Jerry A. Dadap- (1935)

Born: November 5, 1935 in Hinunangan, Southern Leyte.

Musical Style: The first Filipino composer to conduct his own works at the Carnegie Recital
Hall in New York City, started composing when he was still studying at Silliman University in
southern city of Dumaguete.
Compositions: Andres Bonifacio, Ang Dakilang Anak Pawis, Mangamuyo, Tubig ng Buhay,
Dakilang Pagpapatawad, Ang Pag-ibig ng Diyos, Lam-ang Epic, Lorenzo Ruiz, Dios Ama ay
Purihin.

Fr. Manuel P. Maramba, OSB- (1936)

Born: July 4, 1936 in Pangasinan.

Musical Style: one of the most accomplished musicians in the Philippines, is best known as a
liturgical composer whose body of works leans towards religious figures and events. His
versatility as a pianist, composer, arranger, theorist, and teacher is widely recognized.
Compositions: Aba! Sto. Nino, La Naval, Lord Takayama Ukon, Awakening; Seven Mansion;
Papal Mass for World Youth Day 1995; Mass in Honor of San Lorenzo Ruiz; Mass in Honor of
Sto. Nino; Three Psalm; Pugad Lawin; Ang Sarswela sa San Salvador and etc.

Ramon P. Santos- (1941) National Artist for Music

Born: February 25, 1941 in Pasig.

Musical Style: features chromaticism, music seria, and electronic components, combined with
indigenous Philippine music elements. He held the position of Dean of the UP College of music
from 1978 to 1988. At present, he is the head of the UP Center of Ethnomusicology and was
appointed Professor Emeritus of the same institution.
Compositions: Ding Ding nga Diyawa, Nabasag na Banga, at iba’t iba pang Pinag-ugpong-
ugpong na Pananalita sa Wikang Pilipino para sa labing anim na tinig; L’BAD

Francisco F. Feliciano- (1942-2014) National Artist for Music

Born: February 19, 1942 in Morong, Rizal.

Musical Style: is one of Asia’s leading figures in liturgical music, having composed hundreds of
liturgical pieces, Mass settings, hymns, and songs for worship. At the Asian Institute for liturgy
and Music, a school for church musicians which he founded, he supervised the publication of
a new Asian hymnal containing mostly works of Asian composers.

Born: March 6, 1959

Musical Style: is the founding music director of the Metro Manila Community Orchestra, the
UP Festival Orchestra, and the Crosswave Symphony Orchestra. He is noted for conducting
the premiere performances of the works of Filipino composers as well as other Asian
composers. His own musical compositions have been performed by well-known international
artists and ensembles.

Barasyon, Asia, Kah-non, Humigit Kumulang, Lima, Mi-sa, Missa de Gallo, Musika para sa

Jonas Baes (1961)

Born: in Los Banos, Laguna in 1961

Musical Style: Associate Professor in Composition and Theory, ethnomusicologist, cultural
activist, and writer, has explored innovative territories and unusual musical treatments in his
works. He is known for writing music utilizing unorthodox musical instruments such as bean
pod rattles, leaves, iron-nail chimes, various Asian instruments such as bamboo scrapers and
bamboo flutes, and vocal music using Asian vocal techniques.

3 Song Composers

Another category of the 20th century Filipino musicians are the well-known
song composers and lyricists. And they are as follows:

Levi Celerio (1910-2002) National Artist for Literature and Music

 Made it to the Guinness Book of World Records for being the only person to
make music with a leaf. He also wrote the lyrics for over 4,000 songs, and
received numerous awards for his musical achievements in film.
 Compositions are: Ang Pipit, Sa Ugoy ng Duyan, Misa de Gallo, Itik-itik (folk
song), Tinikling (folk song), Ang Pasko Ay Sumapit.
Constancio de Guzman (1903-1982)

 is the composer of the nationalistic song Bayan Ko. Acknowledged as the
Dean of Filipino Movie Composers and Musical Directors, “ De Guzman
became the music director of movie production companies like Sampaguita,
LVN, Royal, Excelsior, Lea, and Tagalog Ilang-ilang Productions.
 Compositions: Bayan Ko, Babalik Ka Rin, Ang Tangi Kong Pag-ibig, Birheng
Walng Dambana, Maalaala Mo Kaya, Sa Piling Mo, Ang Langit Ko’y Ikaw.
Miguel “Mike” G. Velarde Jr. (1913-1986)

 Was a composer, conductor, and musical director. He composed the popular

song Dahil Sa Iyo in 1938. In 1975 the Philippine Government Cultural
Association awarded him the Cultural Achievement Award in Popular Music.
He received the Gawad CCP Para Sa Sining in 1986.
 Compositions: Buhat, Ikaw, Bituing Marikit, Minamahal Kita, Dating
Sumpaan, Dalisay, Eternally Yours, Gabi at Araw, Dahil sa Iyo.
Santiago Suarez (1901-1964)

 Was an accomplished composer of traditional Filipino love songs. His

popular works includes Dungawin Mo Hirang, Bakya Mo Neneng,
Caprichosa, Sa Libis ng Nayon, and Kataka-taka.
 Compositions: Ligaya Ko, Pandanggo ni Neneng, Labandera Ko, Lakambini,
Kamia, Ikaw ang Buhay Ko, Kay Lungkot Nitong Hating-gabi, Mutya
Niyaring Puso.
Restituto “Restie” A. Umali (1916-1998)

 was a composer, teacher and musical arranger. He arranged the Philippine

national anthem Philippine Independence Night in Boston 1972. He wrote a
total of more or less 120 movie theme songs and composed more than 250
scores for movies.
 Compositions: Saan Ka Man Naroroon, Alaala ng Lumipas, Ang Pangarap
Ko’y Ikaw, Sa Libis
ng Barrio, Di Ka Nag-iisa, Paano Kita Lilimutin.

Angel M. Pena (1921-20140)

 Was a classical and jazz composer, musical arranger, and bass player. He is
widely considered by modern Filipino jazz musicians as “one of the founders
of traditional jazz in the Philippines.”
 Bagbagtulambing, Igorot Rhapsody, Concerto for Double Bass and
Orchestra, Concerto for Jazz Quartet and Orchestra.
Ernani J. Cuenco (1936-1988) National Artist for Music

 was a composer, film scorer, musical director, and music teacher, and was
named National Artist for Music in 1999. His works embodied the Filipino
sense of musicality, with the classical sound of Kundiman evident in many
of his ballads. To this day, his compositions continue to be popular and well-
loved.

George M. Canseco (1934-2004)

 Was considered “a nationally acclaimed composer of numerous popular

Filipino classics.” He composed songs for some of the country’s top popular
singers such as Sharon Cunita, Basil Valdez, Regine Velasquez, Zsa Zsa
Padilla, Pilita Corrales, Martin Nievera, and Kuh Ledesma. He wrote the
classic Kapantay ay Langit, a movie theme song, as well as Child, the
English-language version of Freddie Aguilar’s signature song Anak. He also
served as President of the Filipino Society of Composers, Authors and
Publishers, Inc.(FILSCAP).
 Compositions: Ikaw, Kailangan Kita, Dito ba, Hiram, Langis at Tubig,
Hanggang sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan, Sinasamba Kita, Kastilyong
Buhangin, Minsan Pa Nating Hagkan ang Nakaraan, Ngayon at Kailanman,

Leopoldo R. Silos Sr. (1925-2015)

 Was a composer, singer, and arranger. He composed and recorded

romantically soulful songs. He was the award-winning musical director of
the television musical program Aawitan Kita.
 Compositions: Dahil sa Isang Bulaklak, Hindi Kita Malimot, Aling Kutsero,
Ay Anong Saklap, Basta’t Mahal Kita, Diyos Lamang ang Nakakaalam, Hindi
Ko Malilimutan, Lagi Kitang Naalala, Langit at Lupa, Halina Halina, Lihim
na Pag-ibig, Mundo Ma’y Mawala.
