shadowed Joan Neiman and I learned a lot about taking care of hair and the shop that you do
business at. It was a lot of fun I learned how a lot of things work like you have to disinfect all of
the tools you used before you use them again on a different person. I spent 4 days shadowing in a
total of 20 hours. My research question and essay took a little longer to figure out and finish. I
struggled to find a good topic that was in the world of cosmetology and somewhat relevant to
what I learned while shadowing. In total I probably took about a whole week to just write the
research paper but after I found a topic and some source material the essay was the easiest part of
this whole project. I did my research paper on sulfates in hair care products and how they are
harmful to certain types of hair. I learned a lot about this topic through researching it and learned
that sulfates aren’t all bad and can in fact help when used properly and not constantly. Making my
product was very easy but trying to find a place to theoretically make my dream salon was the
hard part. I looked in Sioux Falls, Brookings, and Watertown for a place in a mini-mall or regular
mall to house my salon. I found a few good candidates while searching the area but I decided on a
space in the Watertown mall so it would be closer to the place I plan to go to school at. The
amount of time I spent building and searching for the perfect location took about two weeks.
One of the challenges I faced while making my senior project was trying to find a
research topic. There aren’t very many problems in the salon industry. I struggled to find any
recent problems everyday people are experiencing but I landed on the misinformation that is
being spread about sulfates. I am very familiar with the sulfate problem in shampoos and thought
that I should probably learn more about them to benefit myself as well. Another problem I faced
was trying to figure out whether I should make a 3D model of my product or I should just keep it
on the internet like everyone else seemed to be doing. I like to do more hands-on projects so I

decided that I should do what I’m best at and do a 3D model, then I wouldn’t worry about it being
From the start of this project, I didn’t manage my time very well. I struggled to find days
that would work for me and my mentor for my shadowing hours and ended up not getting them
done on time but we worked out times that I would see the most things to help me with my
project. After the rough start, I got more into the project and finished my research paper ahead of
time and I didn’t have to worry about that at all because once I found something that I wanted to
write about everything was enjoyable. Then finally it came to doing my final product and I put it
off till the week before I had to first present which was very stressful and I didn’t enjoy it at all to
rush on some of the details, but I finished it before I needed it and I got to add a few finishing
touches to it that made me enjoy the process a little bit more. Overall this project has been the
easiest thing to do looking back to it because we got a lot of time to work on it in class and
outside of school. At the times I felt stressed I thought I would never finish it but now that I am
I learned so much about the profession that I plan to start and I am very grateful for that. I
got to see firsthand how the job works and how happy it makes people getting a new hairdo or
retouching on the one they love. I got to learn more about the problems I faced through the
misinformation that gets spread by a worried person and got to debunk most of the facts I have
heard all of my teenage life. I am very happy that I got this opportunity to dig deeper into the
problems I might face later in my life as a hairdresser trying to answer someone’s questions about
their hair. I also learned that rushing through something might cause unnecessary stress and you
should take your time on the things that need time to work through.

I hope to use all of the information I learned while shadowing to further my knowledge at
college. I had a very good mentor and I enjoyed everything I did while shadowing. I also hope to
use my knowledge of the rules and regulations to help further my career. I hope to use many of
my new skills in the fall when I start at Lake Area Technical College in the cosmetology
department.
