Mercy Values Reflection

In the Education Department, the Mercy values of Mount Aloysius College are reflected

throughout our studies in a variety of ways. Mercy, Service, Justice and Hospitality are

prominent in the Elementary Education Program because teaching encompases all four areas.

Mercy is the act of entering into someone else’s chaos in order to bring them comfort. In

the Education Department, Mercy is shown through observations. When I go to observe a

classroom, I interact with the students. Often times, I am not sitting in a chair watching the

students. By interacting with the students during observation hours, I am able to enter into some

of the students’ “chaos” that may be happening in their life, or even in the classroom. I can bring

comfort to a student who has family issues at home, or I can assist a student with a math problem

that is bringing them extra stress. Either way, Mercy is clearly defined in the education program.

Service is putting others before yourself in order to benefit the other person. Teaching, as

a profession itself is full of the act of service. Teaching makes me adapt my way of teaching a

subject, or unit plan to students in a way that will most benefit the student. This in itself is an act

of service because I am willing to go out of my way to make sure the child is learning.

Justice is creating relationships that will benefit everyone involved. As a teacher, this is

super important. Without creating positive relationships with my students, learning may become

limited. Also, creating positive relationships between families and teachers is just as important,

because it may allow the family to become more involved in their child’s education.

Hospitality is creating an environment where everyone feels comfortable. Teaching

reflects hospitality because one of our main jobs is to make students feel as comfortable in the
classroom as possible. Creating a bright welcoming space for students to come learn everyday

makes the students a little more excited to be there, and keeps them wanting to learn. Having

new seating arrangements, or changing the room decorations are simple ways to have a hospital

learning environment.

The Mercy values of Mount Aloysius College are reflected throughout the Elementary

Education Department in a variety of ways. Mercy, Service, Justice, and Hospitality are

displayed in the education department through the observations completed, the act of teaching

itself, teaching to accommodate everybody involved, and by creating an environment where

children can feel comfortable to learn in a classroom setting.
