Subject: Weekly Safety Toolbox Meeting
Topic: Ladder Safety
LADDER TYPES AND USE:
Ladders purchased will be certified, and of sound construction. Metal ladders for electrical works and
job-made ladders are prohibited on the project.
The side rails of all ladders will extend 36 inches above the landing. When this is not practical, grab rails
will be installed. All ladders in use will be tied or otherwise secured to prevent displacement. Three
points of contact must be maintained while using a ladder. Never climb a ladder with tools in your
hands.

LADDER SPECIFICATIONS:
All straight and extension ladders will have nonskid feet. Stepladders and platform ladders will not be
longer than 12 feet as determined by the front rail. Ladders may not be painted or altered. All portable
ladders will be equipped with nonskid safety feet and place on a stable base. The access areas at the top
and bottom of ladders in use will be kept clear of obstructions.

LADDERS INPECTION REQUIREMENTS:

Ladders must be in good condition at all times. The user must inspect the ladder before each use.
Ladders will be inspected quarterly by a competent person, and the applicable quarter’s color code will
be marked on the side rail as follows:

January, February, March = RED

April, May, June = BLUE
July, August, September = YELLOW
October, November, December = GREEN

USING A STEPLADDER SAFETY

Stepladders are commonly used in the construction industry, but they require careful use. They are not
designed for any degree of side loading and are relatively easily overturned.

AVOID OVER REACHING

People have been killed getting down from workplace such as loft spaces when they have stepped onto
the top step of a stepladder which then overturned.
 Ensure stepladders are positioned on level ground and used in accordance with manufacturer’s
instruction.
 Do not use makeshift or homemade ladders or carry out makeshift repairs to a damage ladders.
 Make sure all four feet of the ladder are on a firm, dry, level surface.
 Be sure to clear the ground area around the ladder before climbing.
 Check the ladder carefully for any cracks or loose pieces.
 Only use stepladders in a fully position. Lock the side braces and cross braces before climbing.
 Do not use a stepladder as a straight ladder in a folded and leaning.
 Always wear proper footwear with good tread when climbing.
 Don not stands on top two steps of a ladder unless they are designed for standing.
 Watch for people working under or around the ladder.
 Keep your body centered on the middle of the ladder.
 Do not lean to reach items while standing on the ladder.
 Get someone to assist you when working with ladder.
 Avoid lifting or carrying any heavy items while climbing up or down the ladder.
 Use a ladder made out of non-conductive material for electrical work.
 Do not use stepladder to support work platform.
 Ladders must be used for access to all scaffolds conforming to the 1:4 rule (75 degree); under no
circumstances must any attempt be made to climb up the outside of scaffolding as this makes
the structure unstable.
 Ladders used on scaffold shall not be more than 6m in length. At every 6m a rest platform shall
be provided. At no time shall there be consecutive working platform openings that allow a fall of
more than 2 lifts of scaffold height.
 All Ladders must comply with Procedure 219 – Ladders, Steps & Lightweight Staging

WHEN LADDERS ARE USED:

 Ladders must be setup in accordance with project requirements (e.g., established at the proper
angle, secured from displacement, free of slippery material on the rungs, steps or feet, extend 3
feet (0.9 meter) above the access landing, etc.).
 Personnel using ladders must maintain a 3-point (two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand)
contact and keep their body centered on the ladder when climbing.
 Damaged ladders must be removed from site.
Ladders tagged with a “Danger – Do Not Use” tag must not be used by personnel until inspected by
a competent person, deter-mined to be compliant with project requirements, and the danger tag
removed.
