Course Outline
Fluid Properties: Introduction to fluid mechanics and its significance, fluid properties and its
classification based on viscosity and compressibility of fluids, surface tension and capillary tubes.

Fluid statics: Importance of fluid statics and its laws including Pascal’s and Hydrostatic law,
concept of pressure, pressure measurement and devices, hydrostatics forces on plane and curved
surfaces, buoyancy of fluid at rest, stability of a floating body.

Fluid Kinematics: Flow characteristics, Descriptions of Velocity and acceleration field


(Streamlines, streak lines and path lines), Control volume and representation of system.

Fluid dynamics: Application of Newton’s 2nd law in fluids, equation of continuity, Euler's
equations of motion, impulse momentum equation, deriving Bernoulli's equation and its
applications, Total, stagnation and dynamic pressure. Hydraulic Coefficients, Classification and
Discharge through Orifices, Mouthpieces, Notches and Weirs.

Dimensional analysis: Dimensional analysis, Buckingham- Pi theorem and determination of pi


terms.

Grading Policy/ Assessment Weightages


For this program, relative grading system is adopted. Weightages are as follows:
