Project Proposal: Energy Efficient Building or Zero Energy Building

This document presents a project proposal for an energy efficient or zero energy building. It was submitted by 4 students to their supervisor and department of civil engineering. The objectives are to efficiently use energy, water and resources, improve occupant health and productivity, and protect the environment. It discusses what zero energy buildings are, why this method is being used, and how zero energy can be achieved through site selection, design, and efficient sources. The methodology, scope, tools, and team expertise are also outlined.

Introduction
We all take energy for granted. As we all know the population of our world is
increasing exponentially to levels never imagined, this will lead to great
consequences if we don’t manage this properly. The single biggest challenge
of our future is adequate energy for the exponentially growing population.
Without adequate energy there will be no clean water, shortage of food, lack
of shelter and inevitable energy wars. In this regard, the energy efficient
buildings or zero-energy buildings is a very useful solution. By integrating
energy efficiency in buildings, sustainable development can be brought into
the building sector. For achieving the goal of zero energy building, the design
should be such that it can optimize maximum outdoor weather conditions.

Objective
The main objectives of energy efficient building or zero energy building are.

 How to use energy, water, and other resource in an efficient way.

 To provide total health protection and improving employee’s
productivity.
 To protect environment from water, air pollution and provide a better
life.
 To provide the detail, ambitious, clear definition, and fast uptake of
zero energy building
 To eliminate the necessity of active energy loads on the building.
 To comparing the net zero energy building with conventional building
so that we able to know how it is helpful for us.

Problem Description
 What is zero energy building?
 A zero-energy building is a building in which the energy consumed
will be equal to zero.
 In the energy efficient building the total amount of energy will be same
that will be roughly estimated as the amount of energy consumed will
be equal to the production of the energy.
 The atmosphere will be less effected by zero energy building as
compared to the non-zero energy building.
 Why we are using zero energy building method not other?
The Adoption of this method will be due to following reasons:
 Due to adoption of zero energy building the energy losses are reduced.
 Due to adoption of zero energy building the utilization of energy will
be minimized.
 Due to adoption of zero energy building the Global Warming and
Greenhouse Gases will be minimized.
 Due to adoption of zero energy building dependence on fossil fuels
will be minimized.
 Due to adoption of zero energy building the environment will be
protected which will be helpful for future generations.
 How zero energy can be achieved?
Zero energy can be achieved by following these ways:
 Zero Energy Building will be dependent on-Site Selection and its
Orientation.
 Zero Energy Building will be achieved when we minimize heating,
cooling and lightning load through a better climate responsive design.
 Zero Energy Building will be achieved by using high energy efficient
sources.

Methodology
Firstly, we will acquire the architectural drawings (Plan, Elevation and
Section) of probably 10-15 stories. Then the building will be simulated in the
Rivet architecture. The house’s annual operational energy consumption will
then be calculated through Ecotect Analysis. Those building’s components
that have most impact on energy dissipation will be investigated. Some
components, such as wall, windows, door, floor and ceiling can lead to the
most energy dissipation. Then alternative changes in material compositions in
the mentioned components of the case study building will be examined to
evaluate their effects on reducing the building’s annual operational energy use.
By doing so the simulated building will then be exported to Autodesk Ecotect
software to perform the energy analysis. for integrating between Revit and
Energy Modeling tool (Autodesk Ecotect Analysis software), zones must be
formed for creating various parts of the building. Without creating zones in
Revit architecture, energy of the building’s various spaces cannot be modeled.
In fact, the file cannot be exported to Ecotect software. After creating zones,
for exporting the simulation file from Revit to Ecotect. This is the way that
can export all building’s specifications defined in Revit to Ecotect.

Project Scope
The future scope of this project is.
 To make a zero-energy building or energy efficient building
 How to adopt the insulation for the energy saving in the design
 To create a better environment for people in which they are independent of the
Conventional energy which include fuel, coal etc.
 Impact of energy crisis should be reduced.
 To make a change in the concept of the drawing
 To create a Balance between demand and supply of energy
 Meeting the aspects of the sustainability, which is future of the world.
Tools/Technology
SUSTAINABILITY USING REVIT:
All the structural analysis and designing has been done using Revit. Revit is the most
popular structural and architectural engineering software product for 3D model
generation, analysis and multi- material design. It has an intuitive, user-friendly GUI,
visualization tools, powerful analysis and design facilities and seamless integration to
several other modelling and design software products.

Expertise of the Team Members

All the team members are pre-equipped with the level of knowledge needed for the
successful completion of this project. We have studied research papers thoroughly and
other content related it till now. So, by thoroughly studying and reading we realize we
can go for it. So equal interest is shown by all members of this group.
