NES Marking of Polymeric Parts

1. SCOPE
This Standard applies to all automotive parts made of polymeric materials (thermoplastics, thermosetting
plastics, thermoplastic elastomers, rubber and chemical fiber).
2. OBJECTIVE
This Standard provides a system for marking of polymeric parts to designate the general type of material
from which the part was fabricated. The objective of this marking is to provide information to facilitate the:
(1) Collection of parts by classification for recycling polymeric parts,
(2) Offer the information for polymeric materials.
(3) Selection of materials and procedures for repairing and repainting polymeric parts.
3. TARGET
As a rule, identify all polymeric parts/materials (thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics, thermoplastic
elastomers, rubber and chemical fiber).
4. IDENTIFICATION
4.1 Size of letters
Height and width of alphabetical/numerical letters shall generally be a minimum of 3 mm.
If the space for identification is limited and the size of 3 mm square or less is visible with eyes, it is
acceptable for use.
Depending on each part size, try to use larger letters for easier recognition as much as possible.
4.2 Marking symbols
Symbols to use for identification shall be quoted from Table 2, 3, 4 and 5.
If the material symbols for use are not in Tables 2, 3, 4 and 5, discussion shall be held with the
Environment Material Ad Hoc Committee, Polymeric Sub-committee.
4.3 Guidelines for marking
Guidelines for marking are as follows:
(1) Marking should be molded into the part or labeled with a sticker with the part number, manufacturer’s
name, and genuine part symbol.
(2) For large or complex shaped part as bumper and instrument panel, more than one marking may also
be required if considered necessary.
(3) The marking shall be in a place which is easy to be seen when separating, as long as this does not
reduce product value.
(4) When ink, dye, or paint is used for marking, they shall not bleed, run, smudge, or stain other materials
which may come in contact with the marking.
(5) Marking shall be designed to remain legible during the entire part life.
(6) The molded marking shall not create a stress concentration site which could result in premature
cracking of the part.
(7) For assembly parts made of compound material structure and multiple parts, each component is
marked as a rule. But, a collective marking for all the component parts is allowed on one
representative part.
(Refer to 6. DESIGNATION EXAMPLES in item, 6.2.)
(8) Field service persons in charge shall be informed of the parts’ component materials to carry out
suitable repair and repainting. (Refer to 6. DESIGNATION EXAMPLES in item, 6.2.)
(9) To manufacture parts with different material from the same mold, multiple material symbols shall be
indicated. → or O at the proper material symbol as material identification may be acceptable.
To indicate → or O, (5) in Principle for identification above shall be satisfied.
Example: When parts of PA and PA + PPE materials are manufactured from the same mold, the part
is made of PA.
>PA<← >PA + PPE< or O>PA< >PA + PPE<

4.4 Exemption of markings
As a rule, the marking shall be provided on plastic parts/materials (100 g or more) and elastomer parts/materials
(200 g or more). On the other hand, the markings are exempted if the following cases are satisfied with plastic
parts/materials (less than 100 g) and elastomer parts/materials (less than 200 g). Table 1 shows examples of parts
which do not need to be marked.
(1) If a part has no space for marking.
(2) Parts that have no space on the back. If the marking is shown on the front, the appearance quality of the part is
deteriorated.
(3) Parts on which the marking may spoil their functions.
Ex. Parts that may leak or become difficult to slide due to waviness of marking.
Parts that may crack or split due to identification.
Parts such as a head lamp lens where the identification can be shown on the main body is excluded.
(4) Spacer, non-woven fabric, sticker, etc. attached to parts
(5) Parts consisting of fiber only (excluding parts with resin or rubber packing such as floor carpet or dash insulator)
(6) Parts adhered or welded to metals such as fusible insulator, outer panel reinforcement, etc.
(7) Parts (50 g or less) with difficulty for stamping in the releasing direction from the mold.

ANNEX

1) Nissan started the identification (marking) of polymeric parts from "FIGARO" released in February 1991.
This standard has been established to standardize the marking method.
2) In the revision in 1995, the excerpted resin symbols were modified according to the revision of SAE J
1344.
3) In the revision in 1998, the modification was performed according to the arrangement of the ISO standard
(ISO11469) concerning material markings.
SAE markings had been appended until this time, but according to this revision, the appending of SAE
marking was deleted.
4) In the revision in 1999, the definition of the marking method was reviewed according to the extension of
the target parts range for material marking. The ISO mark list was added for the description about marking.
The content of the rule for marking was reviewed.
5) In the revision in 2000, symbols described in ISO1629-1995 (Rubber and latices-Nomenclature) were
excerpted additionally.
6) [Overview of the details of the revisions in 2006]

3. TARGET
Since July 2003, the following regulation has been implemented in Europe: The regulation requires
markings on plastic parts/materials (100 g or more) and elastomer parts/materials (200 g or more).
According to this regulation, the description of materials has been added to the target range in addition to
the parts description. Also, the title has been changed from "TARGET PARTS" to "TARGET."
Name of regulation: "Component and material coding standards for vehicles" (2003/138/EC)
Issued date: February 28, 2003 Implemented date: July 1, 2003 or later
Content of regulation: The marking shall be provided on plastic parts/materials (100 g or more) and
elastomer parts/materials (200 g or more) based on the ISO standards (1043-1,
1043-2, 11469, 1629.)

4. IDENTIFICATION
4.4 Exemption of markings
Until this revision, the marking difficult parts described in Table 1 were exempted from marking
regardless of their weight. However, the regulation above requires the identification of plastic
parts/materials (100 g or more) and elastomer parts/materials (200 g or more), therefore the standards
for exemption have been reviewed. In the future there is strong possibility that the identification equivalent
to Europe would be included in recycling regulations in other countries such as Korea, Taiwan, and PRC.
For this reason, the standards for exemption have been made inapplicable to plastic parts/materials (100
g or more) and elastomer parts/materials (200 g or more), regardless of the destination.

5. MARKING METHODS
5.2.1 Abbreviations of the thermoplastic elastomer have been specified in ISO18064 "Thermoplastic
elastomers-Nomenclature and abbreviated terms". According to this specification, the description has
been added that thermoplastic elastomers shall be marked using the specified abbreviations.
5.2.3 Marking method for materials containing a plasticizer has been added.
5.2.4 Marking method for materials containing flame retardant materials has been added.

6. DESIGNATION EXAMPLES
6.1.4 Marking of materials containing plasticizer
An actual marking method for materials containing a plasticizer has been added.
6.1.5 Marking of materials containing flame retardant materials
An actual marking method for materials containing a flame retardant material has been added.

7. SYMBOLS USED IN THIS STANDARD

7.1 Resin material symbol
According to the revision of ISO1043-1, the contents have been reviewed.
7.2 Rubber material symbol
According to the revision of ISO1629, the contents have been reviewed.
7.5 Plasticizer material symbol
The material symbols for plasticizers described in ISO1043-3 have been added.
7.6 Flame retardant material symbol
The material symbols for flame retardant materials described in ISO1043-4 have been added.
7.7 Material symbol of thermoplastic elastomer
According to newly established ISO18064 "Thermoplastic elastomers-Nomenclature and abbreviated
terms", the material symbols for thermoplastic elastomer have been added.
