Maintenance Function of HRM
It ensures retaining productive employees in the organization for long duration of time. It is possible only by
maintaining good relation with employees and providing better working environment in the organization.
Therefore, it is essential to consider health, safety and comfort of employees. It helps to satisfy employees and
makes them committed towards their job. It involves the activities consisting of employee relation, employee
discipline, employee welfare, and effective communication. A brief explanation of these activities is as follows:
a. Employee relation: It is concerned with maintaining better working environment in the organization. There
should be the practice of mutual relation between management and employees and also among the
employees. Managers need to develop such an environment so that subordinates can participate in decision
making process and its implementation.
b. Employee discipline: This activity is concerned abiding by the rules and system of the organization.
Management needs to develop rules, regulation, working procedures and system for smooth functioning of
the organization. All the members from top level to subordinate levels must consider organizational system
while doing activities.
c. Employee welfare: It is concerned with providing some employee wellbeing facilities. Welfare facilities
involve sufficient physical facilities for work, health insurance, canteen facility, recreation facility, rest
room, games and sport etc. Such facilities help to promote healthy working environment for development
of creativity among the employees.
d. Effective communication: Communication is the means of transferring information among the individuals
having common interest. There must be the system of proper communication from top level management to
subordinate levels. It is essential to solve problems and to know about progress of assigned work of
subordinates. Close communication system facilities to overcome misunderstanding, if any, among
members of the organization.
