1.0 Introduction

Aquilion Start is a multislice helical CT system that supports

whole-body imaging. Aquilion Start is packed with premium
technology originally developed for our high-end CT
systems, carefully crafted and adapted keeping in mind the
changing requirements of healthcare organizations,
including the need for faster workflows, universal
accessibility, and sound economics.

1.1 Designed to Maximize Clinical Flexibility

– PUREViSION Detector technology, which was introduced in our premium systems, has been adapted to
achieve the perfect balance of image quality and patient dose optimized for outstanding speed in routine
clinical practice.

– Canon Medical Systems advanced clinical solution ensures excellent visualization of vasculature in CT
studies, while Iodine Mapping provides an extra level of detail as part of your chest CTA exams.

– SEMAR (Single Energy Metal Artifact Reduction) help eliminate metal artifacts, improving visualization of
implants and supporting bone and adjacent soft tissue for a clearer and more confident diagnosis

1.2 Designed to Optimize Productivity Safely

– The Aquilion Start gantry features design innovations to improve the scanning experience for patients
while providing excellent operability and ensuring safety.

– The spacious 780 mm wide bore and 470 mm wide couch allow comfortable scanning for even the
largest patients.

The couch-top can be lowered to a minimum height of 312 mm, which makes it easier to transfer patients
from a wheelchair.

– Intuitive automation and a host of intelligent functions enable fast and efficient workflows that not only
save time, but also provide the perfect clinical solution

1.3 Easy Installation:

Aquilion Start is designed with a minimal footprint of just 9.8 m2 to allow sitting in the smallest of spaces.
Additionally, a comprehensive reduction in energy requirements for all system components minimizes
power consumption.
1.4 Dose reduction technology:

This system incorporates a variety of functions which can significantly reduce the patient exposure dose,
such as AIDR 3D (Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction), QDS (Quantum Denoising Software), SURE
ExposureTM 3D, and Boost3DTM as standard.

AIDR 3D is CANON’s 4th generation iterative algorithm to reduce image noise while maintaining details and
structural edges. With AIDR 3D, the patient dose can be reduced by up to 75% without compromising
image quality.

SUREExposure 3D automatically adjusts X-ray exposure in the X, Y, and Z directions according to the
patient’s body size.

Boost3D allows the X-ray dose to be minimized for regions with high X-ray absorption, such as the
shoulders and pelvis, while permitting acquisition of highly accurate images.

1.5 Metal Artifact Reduction:

SEMAR (Single-Energy Metal Artifact Reduction) technology employs a sophisticated reconstruction

algorithm to eliminate artifacts caused by metal while improving visualization of the implant, its
supporting bone and adjacent soft tissues for an accurate diagnosis.
SEMAR can be used in routine low-dose scans, and the combination with AIDR 3D provides the best
possible image quality without the need for a dedicated scan procedure or additional radiation exposure.

2.0 Gantry
Aquilion Start's gantry houses the X-ray tube, Multi-slice array detectors, generator, slip rings, gantry drive
and other electronics required for data acquisition.
Scan localization is done through LASER alignment lights.
Gantry controls are located on both sides for easy, fast and convenient handling
Gantry opening: 78 cm
Gantry Digital tilt: +/- 30 degrees
3.0 Advanced MUDAT
Besides the acquisition of extremely detailed and complex data with high density PureVision detectors, a
state of the art optical transmission system MUDAT established by Canon serves as a powerful support
tool for high quality imaging, by reliably transmitting massive amounts of data.
4.0 Patient Couch

The Aquilion Start-patient couch facilitates both patient positioning and patient movement during helical
scanning. Operation from the gantry or the main console ensures maximum ease of use. In emergency the
couch top can be pulled out manually with very little effort. The construction of the couch allows the use a
mobile C-Arm for combined CT-Angio examinations.

5.0 Operator’s Console:
The Aquilion Start operator’s console is a single monitor system.
provided with hybrid keyboard, monitor and mouse with a PC like
environment which enables the operator to rapidly learn the system
through a familiar interface, as well as work quickly during scanning
using a graphical (point and click) type software package. The
monitor has a large 19” LCD display with a display area comparable
to 21” CRT monitor of 1280 x 1024 display area each capable of
displaying single or multiple images.
Because of the color display, tissue segmentation and other

advanced post-processing techniques become clearer. This multi-tasking

environment allows a wide range of optional processing functions to be

6.0 X-Ray Generator

Advanced engineering has led to the development of a new high frequency, microprocessor controlled
generator that can withstand the high stresses developed during gantry rotation.
This generator is ready to perform the most demanding CT applications.

7.0 X-Ray Tube - HelicoolTM

Aquilion Start design concept has placed a required an intense focus on x-ray tube design and
performance. This focus utilizes the HELICOOL tube, which excels in heat capacity, cooling rate,
mechanical stability, and serviceability. An advanced concept in anode design helps to increase the tube
cooling rate. Coupled with a high heat capacity, this rapid cooling rate ensures that the HEILCOOL will
deliver the highest clinical performance in helical scanning applications, as well as a long service life. And
the latest filtering technology reduces patient dose and scatter.

8.0 "PureVision" DETECTORS:

Aquilion Start uses the latest generation of 16 hybrid detector/data

acquisition system (DAS) with advanced PureVision detectors array
of 16 rows each of 720 elements resulting in a total number of
11,620 detector elements.
The resulting high dynamic range and high sampling rates with a

15.0 Advanced Helical Scan Techniques

SureScan (Real Time Helical)

Canon pioneered real-time

helical scanning to allow
simultaneous data acquisition,
reconstruction, and display on
the monitor. With this
technique, data sets are
continuously updated during
each rotation of the gantry
and reconstructed at regular
intervals. Through the use of
high speed image processing
hardware and software, up to 12 images per second can be produced. This feature is standard on all
Aquilion Start systems.

Sure Start
Correct timing of the imaging sequence to contrast media injection is critical to obtaining optimum image
quality. Surestart tracks the signal changes in user defined regions of interest in a continuously updated
reference image with a rate of 12 measurements /sec. The diagnostic helical scan can be started manually
or automatically when the signal reaches the desired level. The benefits of SureStart are more consistent
image quality in contrast enhanced studies, simplification of contrast studies for increased system
throughput, and a reduction of contrast media usage since test boluses are not necessary.
