Tip Us Off
He notes that the use of electronic technology opens more
Also Online possibilities, particularly for improving communication and
diagnostics, and that electronics will become cheaper as they
become more widely used.

“Electronics come at a cost, but there is the added value of

safety that can be guaranteed,” comments Olivier. Blasting has
moved from using detonating cord to shocktubes and now to
electronics and Olivier and Levison both note that there has
been resistance to incorporating the new technology.

Blast Consulting Services uses Australia-based explosives

company Orica’s Unitronic detonators which are designed to be
more accurate than the conventional shocktubes, with a
coefficient variant of less than 0,1% for blasts under 25 000
milliseconds.

The Unitronic detonators offer flexible timing that can be set

according to specific requirements to eliminate cutoffs resulting
from fly (blasted) rock. Safety is improved through the ability to
blast remotely, without a blasting cable, using radio frequency
signals. Safety is augmented by communication between the
detonators and the blasting point that informs of misfires and
the status of the detonators.

Levison adds that the electronic detonators’ primary advantage

is the precision of timing, whereas pyrotechnics are
characterised by 10% to 15% scatter in timing .

Blast Consulting Services has been involved in a specialised

blasting application for Impala Platinum, Andru Mining, Gold
Fields, Concor and Benhaus Mining.

A recent project at Impala Plati-num involved blasting between

computer rooms, satellite stations and a public road, which
meant that the blasting had to be done with the least possible
ground vibrations.

Levison comments that there were no vibration problems and

that the blast was one the biggest electronic blasts with single
hole firing that the company has performed.

Blast Consulting Services is looking to consolidate its local

activities before seeking entry into foreign markets, particularly
neighbouring states.

Levison and Olivier agree that the skills shortage is definitely a

factor influencing the industry at present.

Owing to the specialised nature of the applications, they

cannot employ people who require constant supervision. Both
men believe that finding the right people with appropriate
qualifications and experience is the key to the growth of the
company.
