“The Hate U Give” : Final Essay

You are to write a final essay on one chosen topic from below, on the novel The Hate U Give.
Your essay will be a response to one of the following questions:

1. Tupac said that Thug Life stood for “The Hate U Give Little Infants F***s Everybody.”
As the novel progresses, the meaning of Thug Life becomes evident. Use evidence from
the text to show how that acronym becomes an allegory in the novel. Make connections
to the current events of today by discussing how “Thug Life” is epitomized in our
society.

2. One of the many conflicts Starr faces throughout the novel is regarding her identity.
Discuss how and why Starr code-switches, depending on where she is and who she is
talking to. How does this inform, or change, her personal identity?

3. What role does the media play in the novel? How does it influence events, characters, and
interpretation of events? What are the consequences of the role of the media in the novel
(good and bad)?

4. Many characters throughout the novel exhibit bravery. Discuss the individual actions of
one or more characters who chose to be courageous. How were they brave, and why?
Relate their actions to the specific conflicts discussed in the novel.

5. Maverick’s rose garden is a recurring symbol throughout the novel. Discuss the
symbolism of the rose garden and how it contributes to the overall theme. Think about
Tupac’s poem “A Rose that grew from concrete”. Which characters symbolize the rose?
Why and how? (You may combine the two parts of this question, or focus on one -
it’s up to you).

Your essay should have:

- A well thought out and comprehensive thesis

- Introduction, body and conclusion
- Concrete evidence from text to support your claims (at least one per main point)
- 500-750 words

Due Date: Thursday, April 22

You may do extra research or use literary devices to support your arguments.
