a. The teacher should orient students which includes rules and regulations before,
during, and after the activity, breaking the class into groups, and assigning leaders.
b. The teacher should come out with checklist for students about what to bring and what
not to bring.
c. During the instruction, when the actual setting is not feasible, the closest experience
for students to have a sense of the topic is simulating the situations through the use
of videos. It is therefore important that the teacher comes prepared by downloading
the recommended videos ahead on time if there is no internet connection on school.
d. Textbook or the internet is not the only source of information; actual experiences
from resource speakers/persons are great sources of learning.

Pie of My Day
A. Explain to the students that a day is spent into three things: existence time (biological
needs such as eating, sleeping), subsistence time (economic needs: work, chores,
study, and free time (what remains). Ask the students an estimate of how their day is
spent.
B. On a day to day basis, perhaps, we all have limited free time or worst for some
almost no free time at all. However we all have longer breaks during the semestral
break summer, Christmas break or long weekends. During those occasions, how do
your students spend their free time? Ask the students:
1. Have you and your family or perhaps friends ever gone somewhere out of town or
somewhere nearby?
2. Where did you go?
3. What activities did you engage in?

C. Ask the students preferably everyone. Prior to the student giving an answer, make
two columns on the board (Labeled A and B). (Do not yet disclose the proper labels
to the students). Column A will be the outdoor recreation activity and Column B will
be indoor recreation activity or otherwise.
D. When students answer, write the answers of the students to the correct
column without saying or explaining anything to them .
For Example:
Student A: “We went to the beach” (Beach is outdoors with nature, so write “swimming –
beach“ in Column A.)
Student B: “We went to a resort and swimming pool and we also swam.” (Swimming in the
pool is also outdoors but is man-made, not with nature, so write it under Column B –
“swimming pool – swimming.”)
Discussion
Outdoor Recreations are organized activities done during free time for the students’
own personal reasons, where an interaction between man and an element of nature is
present.
Free time refers to the time remaining after existence time (time spent for biological
needs such as sleeping, easting, etc.) and subsistence time (time spent for economic
purposes such as work, chores at home, school and school work). How one decided
to spend free time varies from person to person
Choices for recreation are individually and voluntarily done. What makes one happy
may not be true for others. Therefore, recreation activities depend on one’s interests,
pursuits and needs which may be reflective on one’s beliefs.

includes our natural environment and natural resources which are the land, water,
wildlife, vegetation, open space, and scenery.
It may be in its most natural state or “semi-natural’’ state, a state where it had gone
through some modification by man but has retained its natural features like natural
parks.
Interaction of man and nature is how outdoor recreation differs from other activities –
the element of nature.
Moreover, outdoor recreation does not have formal rules and is not competitive in nature
which makes it different from outdoor sports.
Reasons for engaging in outdoor recreation vary from person to person. Reasons include
personal satisfaction and enjoyment, personal pursuits such as photography, conquering
mountain peaks, attaining fitness level, and environmental education, such as bird watching
and plant naming, among others. Whatever reason there may be, people engage in outdoor
recreation activity for their own sake and pleasure, voluntarily, and of their own choice.
Outdoor recreation has positive effects on the general wellness of an individual, most
especially of it is done with regularity. When we talk about wellness, it encompasses the
general state of person physically, socially, economically, psycho-emotionally, and spiritually
and in the end contributes to a better quality life.
Outdoor recreation involves a lot of physical activity, but one does not need to have athletic
level of skills and fitness to be able to participate. However, one needs to be physically fit to be
able to carry out the activity.

EXPERIENTIAL PHRASE
Use the indirect or inductive approach in defining the concept of outdoor recreation.
A. The activity in the Readiness Phase will be used as a springboard to the discussion
in defining outdoor recreation.
B. Read through the answers in Column A and those in Column B.
C. Ask the students to think why some answers written in Column A. and some in
Column B. Encourage them to think what could be common in Column A. that makes
it different from Column B.
D. Bear in mind the main concepts that are within the definition of outdoor recreation
such that when a student mentions a word relating to the concept, acknowledge the
response and write the word on one part of the board.
E. Encourage the students to think how they can label answers in Column A and in
Column B; give clues until the word “outdoor recreation” is extracted from students or
if the term is totally new to students, give the label for the columns.
F. Using all the words and concepts stated by the students earlier, ask them to define
what outdoor recreation is:
done outdoors
done during free time
in a natural setting (or semi-natural such that some man-made alteration
where made, e.g., natural park where there are cemented path walk, tables)
