Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)

How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.

This clinical rotation has been my favorite one of all, I learned several things and got to feel as a nurse and have a firsthand look at
what the role of the nurse is. Participating in all the diagnostic testing was really fun, it helped me better understand various
disease processes and most importantly what I had to do in order to better care for my patient. Interacting with other healthcare
providers and family members also helped me to feel included and part of the team. This made me more confident in my role as a
nurse and gave me more assurance.

How did you specifically meet the course goals for this course? Give detail for each. (Reminder, course goals are listed on the
evaluation here in blue).

During this clinical rotation, I was able to fully carry out the nursing process and implement all its components in order to take
care of all my assigned patients. Every morning was started by getting report on my assigned patients then doing an assessment,
based on my assessment and report I planned on what I had to do for the patient. Next, I implemented the plans made followed by
an evaluation of how effective my actions were. If not effective, I tried to figure out what else I could do in order to get to these
goals.
I put all my patients at the center of the care I provided, I made sure that the patients had their needs well taken care of. I made
sure that they knew they could always count on me and made myself readily available.
I used therapeutic communication to communicate with my patients, peers, instructor and healthcare team members. I advocated
for my patients by voicing my concerns. I made use of evidence-based practice in order to provide the best care for my patients.

What is the biggest take away you have from this clinical rotation and how will that affect your future practice?

The biggest take away from this clinical rotation is the fact that the patient we care for should always remain at the center and
should always get the best of what we have to offer. Regardless of what is going on a patient should never feel like they are not
receiving the best care we have to offer. It is important to build rapport with our patients and be their advocate. Additionally, it is
important to follow all the safety measures put in place in order to keep our patients safe at all times.

How has this clinical rotation prepared you to take your licensure examination (NCLEX)?

This clinical rotation helped me develop my critical thinking and helped me in the areas in which I struggled, such as in cardiac
arrhythmias. My instructor provided us with cardiac strips which we had to interpret and talk about. In addition to identifying the
type of arrhythmia, we also talked about possible causes, treatments and nurses’ interventions. We also did questions and
scenarios which also contributed to helping me focus more on what the question is asking and not get distracted by the various
things which were thrown at me.
Finally, every time there was an opportunity for a procedure being done, I welcomed it with opened arms. Seeing and doing these
procedures being done helped me assimilate the nurse’s role better and understand the concept. Performing some of these
procedures also help me gain more confidence in my abilities to them on my own while practicing.

Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory. If an item was
identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along with goals to improve performance).

Francine,

I am so glad this clinical experience aided you in seeing the “whole picture”. Nursing is so much more than assessing and
medicating patients. Nurses are the front line, they advocate, identify changes, and provide holistic support. Over the past 6 weeks
I have seen you in all of these nursing roles. You have grown to see your patient holistically, identify their individual needs and have
always gone above and beyond to place them as the priority and center of your care.

By educating ourselves and our patients even more pieces of the puzzle can be realized to best care for our patients and to
improve their understanding and needs during and after recovery. I’m glad this experience allowed you to explore the many hats
that nurses wear and allowed you to practice concepts you had learned about prior. Going forward continue to look at the whole
picture and above all never stop your exploration of knowledge. Your passion for nursing and self-motivation to learn will take you
far within this career. I expect big things from you, all the best in your practicum and future career 
