 The available curriculum is highly theoretical in nature and doesn’t capture the actual

Supply Chain Management

 Supply chain management is the oversight and

facilitation of the people, processes, information,
and technologies involved in the flow of goods
and services from manufacturers and producers
to customers and end users. The goal of supply
chain management is to streamline these activities
to ensure optimal efficiency and cost-effectiveness
from start to finish, encompassing everything
from production to product development, as well
as the systems and processes utilized to direct
these activities.
Layers of Supply Chain
Management
 There are 3 layers of Supply Chain Management which are namely:
 Strategic planning: Decisions, often made by upper management, are
typically those that affect the organization as a whole rather than
individual departments or functions, and they often involve long-
term planning.
 Tactical Management – Tactical management decisions are where
processes are actually defined, and these decisions play an
important role in both minimizing risks and controlling costs. This
level emphasizes consumer demand and aims to achieve the best
value.?
 Operational – Operational decisions should be made only within
the context of strategic and tactical decisions that have already
been established. The decisions made at the operational level
impact the day-to-day operations of a business unit, department, or
individual, and are designed to ensure the maximum cost benefit
and overall efficiency of the supply chain

Process Flow of Supply Chain
Management
 There are 5 primary process flows of Supply Chain
Management which are namely:
 Flow of Products
 Flow of Information
 Flow of Finances
 Flow of Value
 Flow of Risk
 When these flows are properly integrated, better
collaboration and coordination can exist. Increased visibility
and real-time information sharing aligns supply chain partners
and facilitates greater flexibility to adapt to external factors
such as unexpected shifts in demand, increased competition,
regulatory changes, and other factors.

Key Elements of Supply Chain
Management
 Demand Management: Also known as consumption
management or strategic spend management, demand
management enables organizations to address
external spending, arrange and manage purchase
orders, and eliminate waste.
 Communication and Collaboration: The two concepts
are distinct, but closely related, as communication is
imperative for effective collaboration.
 Business Process Integration

Business Process Integration
 Business process integration seeks to eliminate silos, ultimately considering
the various workers, departments, and functions as a cohesive entity.
Business process integration can involve several or all of a multitude of
processes, such as:
 Relationship Management with Customers and Suppliers
 Product Development
 Procurement
 Manufacturing Flow Management
 Inventory Management
 Order Management
 Distribution and Logistics
 Enterprise application integration (EAI) technology is one such solution,
while many modern supply chain management solutions also aim to
integrate core SCM processes to streamline real-time information sharing.

Challenges in Modern Supply
Chain Management
 Fuel Costs
 Business Process Improvement
 Driver Shortage & Retention.
 Government Regulations.
 Technology Strategy & Implementation.

Transport Operations
Management
 The management of transport operations
encompasses aspects of the logistics chain and is at
the heart of the entire service enterprise. The
practice may be viewed as a science in itself focused
on the process inputs resulting to outputs thereby
satisfying customer requirements.
 The key drivers in transport operations include:
 Changes in work practices
 Changes in customer behavior
 Changes in technology
 Increasing or decreasing workloads

Why Transport Operations is
Important?
 Offering real-time transportation tracking
 Improving and integrating transport sourcing, planning, decision
making, and execution
 Selecting the best carrier and keeping quotes organized
 Improving transport follow-up, such as tracking shipments, sending
alerts, etc.
 Creating a more efficient and higher-velocity logistics network
 Effectively measuring performance and productivity
 Lessening the impact of driver shortages
 Optimizing the capacity of containers and vehicles, consolidating
orders, and streamlining location flow and calendars
 Gathering business insights to help with future planning
 Reducing costs and increasing productivity

Understanding Business
Framework
 These objectives of management can be classified into three categories:
1. Organizational objectives
2. Social objectives
3. Personal objectives

 Organizational Objectives
 Management is responsible for setting and achieving objectives for the
organisation. The main objective of any organization should be to utilise
human and material resources to the maximum possible advantage, i.e., to
fulfil the economic objectives of a business.
 Survival: The basic objective of any business is survival. In order to
survive, an organization must earn enough revenues to cover costs.
 Growth: To remain in the industry, management must exploit fully the
growth potential of the organization. There are many indicators of growth
such as sales volume, increase in the of employee count, the number of
products or the increase in capital investment
 Profit: Management has to ensure that the organization makes a profit.
Profit provides a vital incentive for the continued successful operation of
the enterprise.

 Social Objectives
 As a part of society, every organisation whether it is business or non-
business, has a social obligation to fulfill which is to consistently create
economic value for various constituents of society. This includes:
 Environmental friendly methods of production
 Providing basic amenities like schools and crèches to employees
 Giving employment opportunities to the disadvantaged sections of society
 Personal Objectives
 Organization consists of different types of individual who joins it to satisfy
their diverse needs. The individual may seek to satisfy needs such as:
 Peer recognition
 Competitive salaries and perks
 personal growth and development
 Management has to reconcile personal goals with organisational objectives
for harmony in the organisation.

Internship
 My internship started with the orientation as well as an introduction to
the environment of the institution. Now we generally don’t seem to
understand how a supply chain and logistics firm functions. But that is not
just all we do. Unknown to popular opinion supply chain and logistics firms
have a lot to handle. Well my internship entailed learning every aspect of
how the enterprise functions. We provide a plethora of services so it was
natural for me to understand what each entity of the enterprise was built
up for. As n intern and basically a trainee I was supposed to work and learn
the culture around each department. Such as the quality control, HR,
consultancy, Marketing, customer support, Logistics, Transportation,
Inventory and Warehouse management to name a few. Safexpress
provided me with an excellent work environment which helped me gain
perspective of how an efficient company should function. My work profile
consisted of starting with learning how to deal with warehouse
management, inventory management as maintaning the official details in the
company tracking application.
 Along with that I was also supposed to work with the customer relations
and enquiry management teams where I had to ensure that every delivery
was handled in an efficient manner. With coronavirus hitting up the nation I
was then asked to contribute through working from home wherein I had
to manage the customer segment and read about human resource policy
building because of the services being halted around suddenly. All of a
sudden condition of the lockdown has jolted all the industries around the
nation. I have been a part of this wonderful organization with a very
effective work program and this internship provided me with a very gainful
insight into the how an eminent company like safexpress functions.
