Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in Communication:

A Reaction Paper to “The Flight from Conversation”

The article entitled "The Flight from Conversation", written by Sherry Turkle talks about
how technology affects how people communicate with one another and how it changed people
who they are in the real world over the years. The article emphasizes that living in a society full
of technologies limits our growth as human beings. It shows that people like to communicate
with others using different social media platforms rather than talking face-to-face; hence, our
society experiences a lack of communication. Technology makes our lives better and
comfortable, however, it also makes us depend on technology in everything we do in life and, it
keeps us away from interacting with people personally. It has a big impact on becoming who we
are because nowadays, we always use these technologies in our daily lives to check our social
media accounts, to share things about our life and to get information about something, and
because of that, we tend to forget our true selves and the reality that we have. The truth exists
that living in a technological world in which we reliant on our devices; making us connected
digitally but has made us disconnected from the real world itself. Thus, communicating face-to-
face was still the most effective way to interact; because here, we can build relationships and
promote trust, enabling us to express our message and for the message to be clear and understand
by the receiver.
Over the years, as technology continues to improve, society becomes more dependent on
artificial intelligence and undoubtedly linked the world together, making us interconnected. As
stated in her article, "Technology-enabled, we can be with one another, and also elsewhere,
connected to wherever we want to be", human beings through the help of technology can control
where we focus our attention like using a smartphone to communicate as if we were in a face-to-
face setting. I think technology made the world smaller by providing good communication tools,
made it possible to communicate to our friends, family, and to anyone in a far distance which
proved that technology is truly significant in human advancement. Nowadays, social media is

used to connect and engage customers and prospects on a more personal level. It is also used by
the masses in spreading news and anything relevant that can potentially change the political
landscape of a country or a region. Besides, we have indeed become more dependent on
technology as most of our remote interactions today are done through text messages, emails, and
social media platforms. According to www.debate.org, a big percentage of their respondents
believe that humans are becoming too dependent on technology with a result of 84 percent while
the remaining 16 percent disagreed. In today's class setup, it can show that we reliant on
technology for us to be safe while continuing our studies due to pandemic. There is no question
that such high-tech devices have enriched our lives and made everything easy but in this age of
uncertainty, over-reliance will be harmful because we will be left helpless if technology fails us
one day.
Additionally, we've become accustomed to using technology as it eased our lives and our
communication with the universe. Turkle says, "Researchers around the world are busy inventing
sociable robots, designed to be companions to the elderly, to children, to all of us." With all of
the revolutions, modern technology has also made our lives easier, better, and more fun. There is
no doubt that technology continuously advances in each passing day; great minds invent more
and more useful things and machines which lessens the burden of every people. In my opinion,
technology like the sociable robots gives us temporary companionship that provides automatic
listeners and to have someone to comfort us even it has no experience of the arc of human life.
According to www.aginginplace.org, robots nowadays are being built to have impressive
dexterity allowing them to help people to move objects themselves faster and smoother. In my
point of view, I can say how technology had a great effect on our everyday lives, and how we
rely on these inventions like robots and other machinery that provides for our needs and wants.
In this time of pandemic where we lack social communications but smartphones are there to
make a way of socializing with others, online education was conducted and made possible with
the devices and gadgets. But then, at the end of the day, there won't be any other technology and
great inventions that can replace a real person, we are all humans after all.
By constantly relying on cell phones and computers to have a conversation with
someone, people are losing their ability to connect and make in-person relationships. As stated
by Turkle, "We expect more from technology and less from one another and seem increasingly
drawn to technologies that provide the illusion of companionship without the demands of

relationship." I agree with Turkle that most of us are too dependent on technology to the point
where we are losing personal connections with the people around us. We want to customize daily
life and prefer to talk with robots even it have no real understanding of what we are saying to
them in terms of what things mean to us. We were all "alone-together," as Turkle would say. It is
being together physically, but not mentally and socially. One, in particular, is how adults prefer
to rely on technology when communicating in the workplace: she says, "A businessman laments
that he no longer has colleagues at work. He doesn't stop by to talk; he doesn't call. He says that
he doesn't want to interrupt them. He says they're 'too busy on their e-mails…But I'd rather just
do things on my BlackBerry." This example shows how people are in the same room, but too
afraid or don't want to talk to the people around them, unless it is through phones or computers.
I think that is the reason why, the more people use technology to communicate with one another,
the more they find themselves "alone- together." As a matter of fact, as people may be
interconnected through the Internet, they are slowly being disconnected from reality.
The connectivity of a society's dependence on technology results in social disconnection.
The rise of modern technology keep us connected with current relations and it has made to build
social interaction in simple way, but it always had negative effects. Technology has allowed us
to have a social connection that was impossible before but, the fact remains that it slowly ruining
the quality of social interaction that we all need as human beings. The society become too
dependent on technology these days that losing it, even for a day, would be extremely
inconvenient, and for some, life-altering. As of now, we should value and practice the essence of
face-to-face communication than connecting with other people only through technology, before
it's too late.
