ACTIVITY 1.

Look for at least five things in your room that you think ideally capture who you are. List them down and state the
reason for choosing each.

1. Guitar- because playing it make me comfortable when I am stressed

2. Phone – because it helps me in everything from school to my family matters
3. Blanket – it keeps me warm on cold nights
4. Picture frame – it shows an image of my strength an weakness which is my family
5. Posters of One Piece Characters – it is my favourite anime and I am a huge fan

Pop up Question 1:

What do you think of the Diderot Effect? Has this already happened to you?

 It is a very materialistic trait of a person which can sometimes lead to problems like money loss. No I haven’t had
this happen to me

Activity 2

Using at least 5 images (cut from newspapers or magazines), create a mood board and label it “My Material Self.”
Include a brief explanation.

My Material Self

I choose this things because they are the things that I want to have. These things are my dream objects which I want to
purchase with my own money to give it more value and give me a boost in self-morale. I really want to have a gaming PC
not just for playing games but for also editing videos because I want to star Vlogging. Although I already have a guitar, I
still want a new one because my current guitar has holes. I want to have a bow and arrow because I’m really a fan of
medieval weaponry. I also want to have a new pair of shoes because mine is already worn out. Lastly I want to have a
diploma inorder for me to payoff what my parents have sacrificed for me through the years .
Pop up Question 2:

How do you cope with an experience of material loss?

 By staying calm and finding the main reason why it is lost. Find evidence if it was stolen and report it to the
authorities.

Activity 3

Keep a list of everything that you will buy for a week. In the worksheet, file each either under "necessary buy", or
"impulse buy". Include a brief explanation.

NECESSARY BUY IMPULSE BUY THESE ARE THE LIST OF THE THINGS
1 NOTEBOOK 1 GAMING PC THAT I WANT TO BUY AND I NEED TO
2 PEN 2 NEW SHOES BUY. NECESSARY BUY ARE THINGS
3 SNACKS 3 NEW GUITAR THAT ARE IMPORTANT WHILE
4 SHAMPOO 4 NEW PHONE IMPULSE ARE JUST THINGS I WANT TO
5 BODY LOTION 5 BOW AND ARROW HAVE TO GAIN SELF HAPPINESS

Pop up Question 3:

- What is your opinion on the social media platform’s role in your life as a consumer?

 Social media platforms have a huge role in my life as a consumer because they can greatly affect my preferences
with the content they have. For example, YouTube ads can give me an impulse to buy a new pair of shoes
because it showed an advertisement about a new model of Nike

- What can you say about agrarian societies that prioritize basic subsistence over material consumption? How about

western consumer cultures that do the exact opposite?

 Agrarian societies tend to think that their money should be spent on things they really need and not on things
that are unnecessary to avoid over spending and help save money due to low income and high cost of products.
Western consumer cultures are more focused on attaining what they personally want and not on the things that
they really need.

Activity 4

Look at three print advertisements, identify the primary element in each (the celebrity endorser, the product itself, or
something else), and write about both its denotative and connotative meanings.

Denotative: fast food chain and has one of the biggest net worth of all fast food chains

Connotative: is a place to hang out with family and relive the memories. A place to wind down and enjoy a hearty meal
Activity 5

Share at least five things you consider or take into account first before buying something.

1. Price
2. Quality
3. Brand
4. Promo
5. Quantity

Pop up Question 5:

- Can you think of another stage you can add to the Buyer Decision Process?

 No, because for me the processes given are generalized so any thought that came to my mind is just a sub
content of the given processes

- Have you ever bought something while unconsciously following some of the stages in the Buyer Decision Process
before?

 Actually I just realized that I follow those stages when I or I want to purchase something. I always think if it is
really necessary, if there are alternatives, if I should really buy it and finally be happy or regret why I bought that
item

Activity 6

Interview at least two people from different walks of life about their opinions on wealth and consumption. Compare and
contrast their answers.

 I interviewed my classmate and my mother which at the moment has different financial status. Both of them
agreed on the importance of buying goods while considering the cost and usability of the product. They
emphasized on how important it is to save money rather than overspending on something.

Pop up Question 6:

- Do you agree with John Calvin that people can fulfil God’s will through both hard work and material consumption?
Elaborate on your point.

No, because as to what I have observed the people who worked really hard everyday which are the farmers are still the
ones who are poor. Also it is true our action and prayers that we can fulfil God’s will. As to what a verse in the bible said.
“ we came in the word naked and naked we shall leave the world”

Activity 7

Write about a material possession that you have worked hard to be able to afford or buy. Ask one of your classmates the
same question and compare and contrast his/her answer/s with yours.

For me my answer is my phone and her answer was her shoes. We both have an attachment to material stuff but atleast
we used our own hard work to obtain these materials

Pop up Question 7:

- What us your opinion on Marx’s concept of alienation?

 After I’ve read Marx’s concept of alienation I realized that I may be somewhat true because the mindset of
people these day is to work hard to have more money in order to buy material things. The effort that the
workers exert on their job are not for their happiness but in order to obtain money so they can buy their so
called happiness through material thins
