Dear Parents/Guardians:
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) was recently approved for use for those who are 12 and
older. It is a two-dose mRNA vaccine that was the first of its kind: It was the first COVID-19 vaccine that
received FDA Emergency Use Approval in December of 2020. Based on evidence from clinical trials, the
Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was about 95% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 illness in
people without evidence of previous infection. Further real-life studies have demonstrated that it
continues to be highly effective COVID-19, including variants of concern.
Through much hard work on the part of parents, students, and staff, we have been successful at keeping
COVID-19 largely in check in school. Vaccinating as many eligible students and staff as possible will help
us to keep it at bay for the remainder of the school year and through the next school year, bringing us
closer to normal. The Bristol Bay Area Health Corporation (BBAHC) and State of Alaska Public Health
Nurses have been vaccinating residents according to guidelines established by the CDC and State of
Alaska. It is strongly encouraged that students, staff, and parents who are eligible for the COVID-19
vaccine to receive it. Most children who test positive for COVID-19 usually experience little to no
symptoms, some develop severe illness or long-lasting symptoms. Vaccination is the key to preventing
getting COVID-19 as well as any future implications.
