EXPERIMENT 3
OBJECTIVE:
PRELIMINARY
Transient response
The transient response can be obtained by giving the system a unit step input.
The characteristics of the transient response are described by the parameters
such as overshot, rise time, settling time, etc. (Chapter 5, Ogata) In this lab,
the system is connected as a position control system shown in Figure 1, where
G is the gain in the forward path.

Figure 1
Derive the closed loop transfer function. Discuss the effects of the gain on the
transient response.
The steady state response means the system behaviours as the time approaches
infinity. The steady state response is investigated by looking at steady state
errors for a various inputs, such as a step, ramp and acceleration input. The
analysis of the steady state response can be found in the Chapter 5 (Ogata).
Derive the steady state error when the system has a step, ramp and
acceleration input. Discuss how the gain will effect on the steady state errors.
PROCEDURE
Simulate the transient response of the system for G=1, 2 and 5 using the
parameters ( K t and Ts ) measured in the previous lab.
Figure 2
The feedback resistor of the error amplifier is 100k. Set the test signal by
adjusting P3 to provide a step input of 2v . Set P1 to 50 and record the system
step response. Record the system step response with the final stage operation
amplifier gain of 1.
Record the system step response at both cases. Work out the total gain
in feed forward path for each above case.
Experimental test of steady state response
Apply a ramp input of ±5V at 0.1Hz. Record the error response with the
final stage operation amplifier gain of 1.
