that is, many of the notes, Caution, and warning have been
purposely, and this checklist is provide for the direction of
pilot when operating Bell 505.

The pilot in command is responsible for determining that the

helicopter is airworthy and safe for flight. The pilot is also
responsible for remaining within the operating limitations
specified by the current Flight Manual and any revision
thereto.

Should an inconsistency of information exist between this

checklist and the Flight Manual approved by the FAA, the
current Flight Manual shall be authority.

OPERATING LIMITATIONS

Compliance with the limitations in the approved flight

manual is required by appropriate operating rules.

FLIGHT CREW LIMITATION

Minimum flight crew consists of one pilot who shall operate

helicopter from right crew seat.

Left crew seat may be used for an additional pilot when

approved dual controls are installed.

3.3. TAIL ROTOR

There is no single emergency procedure for all types of anti-torque

malfunctions. One key to a pilot successfully handling a tail rotor
emergency lies in the ability to quickly recognize the type of
malfunction that has occurred.
The types of malfunctions that can occur are defined as follows:
1. Drive system failure.
2. Fixed pitch failure.
3. Tail Rotor cable failure.
If a T/R malfunction is suspected in flight, the crew should assess
the malfunction in the following manner:
NOTE
If the helicopter is in a trimmed condition when a pedal
malfunction occurs, Torque (Q) and Airspeed (A/ S) should be
noted and the helicopter flown to a suitable landing area.
Certain combination of Q and A/S will correct a yaw attitude.

1. Establish 90 KIAS level flight.

2. Verify T/R pedal authority by applying left and right pedal inputs
In sequence.
3. If the left and right pedals can b moved freely without yaw
4. response from the aircraft, do the "Complete loss of tail rotor
thrust" procedure.
5. If the right pedal authority is lost and the left pedal authority
is available, do the "Right T/R cable failure" procedure
6. If the left pedal authority is lost and the right pedal authority is
available, do the "Left T/R cable failure" procedure.
7. If the T/R pedals cannot be moved, establish MCP level flight
and verify side slip indicator to assess condition and severity of
the fixed pitch failure.
a. If the T/R pedals cannot be moved and the side slip
indicator is to the right (nose yaws left), do the "Fixed pitch
failures - in flight (left pedal applied) procedure as per
b. If the T/R pedals cannot be moved and the side slip indicator
is centered or to the left (nose yaws right); do the "Fixed pitch
failures — in flight (right pedal applied) procedure

3.3.A. COMPLETE LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR THRUST

This is a situation involving a break in drive system (i.e.,
severed driveshaft), wherein tail rotor stops turning and
delivers no thrust. Severity of initial reaction of helicopter
will be affected by AIRSPEED, CG, power being used,
and HD.

3.3.A.1. COMPLETE LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR THRUST -

HOVERING
• INDICATIONS:
Uncontrollable yawing to right.
Nose down tucking.
Possible roll of fuselage.
• PROCEDURE:
1. THROTTLE — IDLE, perform a hovering autorotation
landing.
NOTE
A slight rotation can be expected
on touchdown.
3.3.A.2. COMPLETE LOSS OF TAIL ROTOR THRUST — IN
FLIGHT
• INDICATIONS:
Uncontrollable yawing to right (left side slip).
Nose down tucking.
Possible roll of fuselage.
• PROCEDURE:

TO PREVENT DAMAGE DURING A RUN-ON TYPE LANDING,

DO NOT USE AFT CYCLIC INPUT TO REDUCE
FORWARD SPEED.
NOTE
To reach a suitable landing site, the vertical fin may permit
controlled level flight at low power settings and
sufficient airspeed creating weather
cock effect.

3.3.B.1. FIXED PITCH FAILURES — HOVERING

• INDICATIONS:
Lack of directional response.

• PROCEDURE:
NOTE
If pedals lock in any position at a
hover, landing from a hover can be
accomplished with greater safety
under power-controlled flight rather
than by switching THROTTLE to
IDLE and entering autorotation.
1. Slightly reduce collective and land.

3-4-A. LOSS OF HYDRAULIC PRESSURE

• INDICATIONS:

Increase in force required to move flight controls.
Feedback forces may be evident during flight control
movement.
• PROCEDURE:

3.4.B. FLIGHT CONTROL ACTUATOR MALFUNCTION

An actuator hardover can occur in any flight control axis. An

actuator hardover is manifested by uncommanded
movements of one or two flight controls. If two controls
move, the pilot will find one of these controls will require a
higher than normal control force to oppose the movement.
This force cannot be removed without turning the HYD SYS
switch OFF. Once the hydraulic boost is OFF, the forces on
the affected flight control will be similar to the "normal"
hydraulic off forces.
• INDICATIONS:
