Sequence of Operation: For Fans& Blowers Start-Up

The document provides instructions for starting up, operating, and maintaining fans and blowers. It outlines the following key steps: 1) Locking out power and checking installation and fasteners before startup. 2) Momentarily running the fan to check rotation and adjusting if needed. 3) Monitoring for issues like vibration during the first 8 hours of operation. 4) Inspecting and adjusting connections after 8 hours of operation. It also provides shutdown, maintenance, and safety procedures, including locking out power before performing any maintenance and taking precautions with variable frequency drives.

SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
FOR FANS& BLOWERS

START-UP

a) Lock out primary and secondary power source.

b) Make sure installation is in accordance with manufacturer’s
instruction.
c) Check and tighten all fasteners, bolts, set screws and keys.
d) Check V-Belt alignment and tension.
e) Make sure there are no foreign loose materials in the duct
work fan itself. Secure all access doors in fans and duct.
f) Properly secure all safety guards.
g) Check the line voltage with motor nameplate.
h) Momentarily energize the fan to check the direction of
rotation. All Niagara fans are provided with directional arrow.
(NOTE: Incorrect rotation overloads motor severely and
results in serious motor damage. To change rotation of 3
phase motor, simply interchange any two of the three line
leads.
i) Switch on the electrical power supply and allow the fan to
reach full speed. Check carefully for.
a. Excessive vibration
b. Unusual noise
c. Proper belt alignment
d. Proper amperage and voltage

If any problem is indicated, SWITCH OFF IMMEDIATELY. Lock

out the electrical supply and carefully check for probable cause.
Correct as necessary. Go over the installation procedure, start-up
& operations and fan check list. If problem still arises, contact
NIAGARA for service assistance.
Even if fan appears to be operating satisfactorily, shut down a brief
period and recheck the fan. Initial start-up may have loosened the
bolts and set screws.

OPERATION
The fan now be put into operation but during the first eight (8)
hours of running, it should be periodically observed and checked
for excessive vibration and noise. Check should be made for motor
input current to ensure that they do not exceed manufacturer’s
recommendations.
After eight (8) hours of satisfactory operation, the fan should be
shut down (lock out the power) to check the following items and
adjust, if necessary:
1. All set screws, bolt, etc.
2. Drive coupling alignment or belt drive alignment.
3. Belt drive tension (re-check again after 24 hours for proper
belt tension.)

SHUT DOWN PROCEDURE

1. Turn OFF electrical switch to isolate the unit from electrical
supply.
2. Do not attempt to open the panel door unless fan wheel has
been fully stop.
3. Lock out all electrical connections. This will serve as a
reminder to other people that someone is making a unit
maintenance.

WARNING!!! ALWAYS LOCKOUT THE QUIPMENT CONTROL

PANEL BEFORE PERFORMING MAINTENANCE WORK.
Do not attempt any maintenance on a fan unless the electrical
supply has been completely disconnected and locked.

FOR VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE (OSM)

1. Diode and IGBT Testing

If the input and output power sections test healthy during the
ABB variable frequency drive repair process, power can be
applied to the drive to perform amp reading and output
frequency testing. Slowly increasing the power voltage during
this step of the drive repairs process is suggested to gather
accurate meter readings and to protect the motor. The power

voltage is slowly increased on the drive until the rated input

voltage of the drive is reached. Depending on whether or not the

drive provides a display will determine what further action will

be taken. If display is unavailable, disassemble and diagnosis of
the internal power supply of the control section of the drive is
necessary to further evaluate cause of failure and establish cost
and lead time of the drive repairs.

2. MOTOR TESTING
If the previous three tests have passed during the ABB variable
frequency drive repair process, a basic JOG/ RUN function of
the drive can be performed with a simple template program.
When a drive comes into our facility, repair techs will back up
all existing programs stored in the drive prior to installing a test
template program for testing. Backing up the drive program
ensures that we have a backup copy of the program to install
after the repair is complete. The best method for backing up
drive programs will depend on the series and model of drive
that’s being repaired. After the drive programs have been
backed up, the drive is reset to factory default through the
keypad and then decommissioned to a basic START / STOP
function of the drive connected to its motor. Closed loop testing
will be necessary when an encoder or tachometer is involved. If
the motor will not run, the output voltages and motor current
ratings are tested to verify that the drive is functioning properly
to rotate the motor.

3. Safety Precautions
Manufacturers are encouraged to ensure that their ABB variable
frequency drive repair are being performed at the actual site of
whoever is offering the service. Drive repairs should be taken
with extreme caution and only be performed by technicians who
have required training and experience to work with electrical
equipment. Precision Electric strongly recommends to consult
an expert in the field when repairing all industrial electrical
equipment. Many drive controllers have an internal DC bus that
retains a charge after power has been cut to the drive, and as a

Maintenance Manual

result, electrical current is still present after power is shut

down. Technicians performing VFD repairs must always take

extra precautions to ensure proper safety measures are taken,

or injury or even death may occur.

FOR FAN COIL UNIT (OSM)

 Inspection
During the start-up of the FCU, please check the following
important points.
1. All the PIPE works must be installed properly. The FCU pipe
connector should be flexible connector.
2. The entire cooling coil piping work should be installed
properly; the refrigerant should be filling up the coil to vent
the air in the refrigerant system properly.
3. To check the drain piping work installation, the drain pipe
should be installed with P-trap. Fill the drain pan with
water to check if water flows properly.
4. All FCU, piping works and control wirings must be installed
properly. Make sure all the valves location and water level is
correct before start-up.
5. The power connection should be installed properly. The
electrical work should comply with the local code and
standard.
6. All FCU should be clean, vibration isolation and bolt
connection should be properly tightened.
7. Check the fan coil unit installation. (Be sure to shut-off the
power supply before inspection)
a. Check the vibration isolator if working freely.
The spring bolt should be loose.
8. Check the air filters if it is dirty. Clean the filter or refer
when to change filter or change as necessary.
9. Check all the other apparatus if installed properly.
10.Check the unit power supplies. The voltage deviation should
be within tolerance.
