1. SCOPE

This procedure specification covers the thermal treating ( PWHT ) for Shop and / or field
process and utility.

2. APPLICABLE CODE and SPECIFICATION

2.1 ASME Sect. 12007 Edition Rules For Construction Of Power Boiler, July 1,
2007 ASME B31.1 - 2007 (Revision of ASME B31.1 - 2004 ) Power Piping
2.2 Project Specification.

3. METHOD OF POST WELD HEAT TREATMENT

The operation of Post Weld Heat Treatment shall be performed in accordance with the
requirements given in the applicable section of ASME Section I and ASME B31.1.

The Post Weld Heat Treatment shall be conducted locally by means of Electric Resistance Heater.

4. LOCAL PWHT ( By Resistance Method )

Weld joint shall be locally Post Weld Heat Treatment in such manner that the entire band
shall be brought up uniformly to the required temperature and being held for the specified
time by electrical resistance heating.

A : Local PWHT of Power Boiler and Power Piping

In local heat treatment, a circumferential band must be heated until the specified temperature range
exists over the complete circumference of the pipe section. With a gradual diminishing of the
temperature outward from the edge of the band which includes the weld or the bent or formed
section.

( a ) In local heat treatment of butt welded joints, the minimum width of the circum ferential band,
centred on the weld, shall extend 1 in. ( 25 mm ) beyond the edges of the weld.

( b ) In local heat treatment of the welded branch connections, the width of heated circumferential
band shall extend at least 1 in. ( 25 mm ) beyond the edge of the weld.

( c ) In local heat treatment of bent or formed sections, the minimum width of the circumferential
band shall extend to 1 in ( 25 mm ) on each side of the bent or formed area.

4,1 Thermal Insulation

( a ) In local PWHT Method, insulation blanket such as ceramic fiber blanket or equivalent material
shall be provided for the are being treated.

( b ) The insulation blanket shall be kept in place with steel bands or steel wires.

(c) Where possible, the ends of piping should be sealed to prevent internal air currents from
creating excessively high thermal gradients trough the thickness of the piping.

( d ) After treatment all material shall be cooled in still air, protected from rain and draughts and if
insulation blankets have been used, they shall be removed until the treated area has cooled to hand
warm temperature i.e. 25° C to 30° C.

mm ) and below. For nominal diameter from 12 inches up to 18 inches, at least two
thermocouples
are required, located 180 apart, with one on top for weld in a vertical plane. For nominal
diameters over 20 inches at least 3 thermocouples are required-one located at the bottom and
2 on the sides. For any diameter of Vertical pipe, thermocouple shall be located on side follow
the pipe diameter required for position of thermocouple or according project specification.
