Part of the scientific writing element is to review research that has been conducted.

Why do we do this? We do this to verify what has been done and on how problems
were addressed. Based on your readings, web research, and experiences, what do
you consider to be the 4 major goals of a literature review?

A literature review is a survey of scholarly sources on a specific topic. It provides an
overview of current knowledge, allowing a researcher to identify relevant theories,
methods, and gaps in the existing research. It summarizes both supporting and
opposing ideas and refers to other scholars who have worked along the same
general set of ideas. (Fred  & Bevely, 2008).On the other hand the review of
literature involves previous work done by other scientist related to our work. These
involves question like what has been done previously, what is the current status of
the work and what is the future of the work. This also involve how our proposal is
going to be different from others so that there is a comparative discussion between
work done as well as proposed work. ( Bui, 2014, pp.25).
Therefore, when conducting a literature review, there are certainly some common
criteria to be aware of towards completion of a thesis or dissertation .These include:

 To determine what exists in the scholarly literature

 To identify possible gap(s) in the scholarly literature for further research
 To inform the research topic, theory (if applicable), and associated
methodology
 To compare/contrast against findings resulting from the current study
It is therefore, important to note that when conducting a research, its essential that
we are aware of , and knowledge existing research in our chosen area. Most student
researchers therefore, should spend most of their considerable amount of time
reviewing the literature, first in order to identify possible gaps or ideas that can help
to refine their own research and secondly, to examine relevant sources so as to
become fully conversant with the literature. (Wilson, 2010, pp.67)
